Electric Windows
Hello, my name is John I live in the UK and stumbled accross this site lookin for help.
I have just bought a 1981 '924. RHD and have a problem with the electric windows...they dont work. I have stripped of the door pannels and found that the switches were not connected, reconnected but didint work. I took out the window motor mechanism and tried connecting straight to battery, it worked fine. I cleaned up the rest of the mechanism and freed it up. Putting it back in was a bit awkward but mannaged all the same. I have ordered a haynes manual and a workshop cd but none have arrived yet. Can someone possibly tell me were the relay is for the windows?. I checked the fuse and thats ok. Or is there anything else I can check. Thanks in advance john |

Hi John,
Odd that the switches weren't connected. As they're quite expensive to replace, they're the first thing I'd check, as they may be duff (they're about £20 each). taking them apart *very* carefully (there are side metal plates on them that break at the slightest provocation), and cleaning the contacts with a wire brush would be my first port of call.

thanks for that, i did buy two second hand ones from porsche apart which seem fine, i tried them but still no luck, do they all need to work? i.e would any one failing take out all the windows. For testing do they all need to be connected? or if i know i have a good switch can i move it from socket to socket to trial.
I wondered about the switches being disconnected and as the bottom of the door cards where very wet wondered if someone had disconnected to stop any problems caused by water ingress. where will i find the relays? I read they were near the steering column but cant see any but did wonder if they were referring to LHD. On the passenger side there are two more tucked up on the right just behind the centre console. I disconnected them and they appeared to be u/s...but there where two! Are these related to the windows? if not what are they for? Cheers |

The switches are wired in series if one is bad the other will not work right. Check www.clarks-garage.com they have a wiring diagram under the shop manual "window switches " section

The switches can be easily (gently) disassembled and the contacts cleaned. Corrosion at the contacts is a common cause of windows not working.
You need the schematics, the ones for the 924 in Haynes are pretty good. With a multimeter it is pretty straightforward to find where the voltage is and where it ain't... Good luck, Jon

The relays are above the fuse box.

I'm not sure about the 924, but the early 944 have the window relay sitting up in the dash - the right of the glove box. You need to remove the glove box to get at it. Why did they do this? Dunno. but it's a PIA. It's a good chance that this was a carry on from the 924 design.
