rear defroster / switch on console

I just bought my '87 924S this summer, so I haven't needed the rear defroster until this morning. Which switch is rear defrost? My system may not be hooked up, but I need to know the place to start.

Also, there are two switches on my console. One is for the electronic mirrors. Does anyone know what the other switch is for? I am going with the assumption that these are standard.

Thanks.

Rob

Rear defroster switch is between the ignition switch and the hazard light switch. The standard four center console switches are: power mirror toggle, rear wiper, headlight washer rocker, and rear fog light. OEM switches have white icons showing what they are for.

In mine, I have the mirror toggle (standard) and a second (no label) that was added for the aftermarket alarm arming switch. If yours doesn't have the three optional add-ons it's hard to say what it's for.

Sunroof and mirror.

Do you have an owners manual?

rear defroster

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I do not have the owners manual.

I see the light for the toggle for the rear defrosters go on, but nothing happens. They must be either broke or disconnected.

I'll post a pic this weekend.

Thanks again.

"Sunroof".. isn't that ahead of the shifter just like on the '44?

Very likely. Check the connections at each end of the gas lifts for the hatch and where it connects to the grid.

Took me forever to find where my controls for things are, because all the little white lettering has flaked/worn off the buttons, fortunately, they all work

On the counsel, I only have two switches, mirror and ? (they are the two outside switches)The middle two are blanks. Unfortunately the markings are worn away. Someone must have done a lot of mirror adjusting.

Looks like I bought the cheap version of the cheap Porsche. Sunroof is located further up the console near the gear shift.

On the early cars, 3 out of the 4 switches were used.

(1) Rear wiper
(1) Head light washer
(1) Blank - rear fog light not an option back in 83.
(1) Activates the right of left mirror - to use the mirror adjustment ball on the dirver's door.

The rear defroster switch(next to the hazzard light on the dash). There is a fuse and a relay for the rear defroster. The light on the switch only indicates that the switch is in the 'on' position. It doesn't know whether or not the defroster is working.

Things to check:

The relay, located with the rest on the relays - see owners manual.
The LH hatch shock - Using a multi meter, check the conductivity between at the ends. If you get nothing, replace the shock. Check the connections at the grid. You should get conductivity.

Finally, print out the article on the Clarks Garage Web site about the rear defroster. It will tell you how to troubleshoot the defroster. You will need a multimeter for this. You might have a bad ground.

Since you haven't mentioned any of the three optional add-on's you must not have them?

Just a thought.. maybe you can pull the ashtray and see if you can tell what color wires are connected to the right switch.. and might provide a clue if they look stock or aftermarket??
