Question If the rotor flies off, what's the worst that could happen?

I recently replaced the distributor cap and rotor. Car runs much better now (using Bosch and Porsche brand Cap and Rotor).

=)

Anyway, I had fits getting that rotor on. The friction fit is 'very' good, but the set screw that holds the rotor to the sleeve was stripped, and I had to re-use it, so I had to use vice grips/needle nose pliers to put it in, it didn't seem perfectly lined up (but thread none the less). It's in maybe 75% of the way down, and 'tight' as I can get it... ugh, what a mess.

ANYWAY, if the screw comes out and the rotor some how comes off, what's the worst that could happen?

Thinking about it, I should have kept my old cap... I have a junkyard rotor and sleeve/hub (with a stripped screw, but rotor is in fair shape), and an 8mm wrench in the car, in case the rotor comes apart. Would it take the cap with it?

*edit*

The screw would hopefully fall pretty quickly and stay down... and the rotor just wouldn't spin with the sleeve/hub, it shouldn't fly apart and damage things, right?

I doubt anything will happen. doubt the screw will even come out. Locktite the set screw and dont worry about it anymore.

I only have 5 min epoxy... but doing that would make me as bad as the PO. . Red-Loctite on EVERYTHING (set screw, and rotor metal ring...

Then again, I hope to be the owner forever... so screwing myself is okay! (I have the spare hub/rotor) =)

If the set-screw just backs out, but stays in the rotor button, then typically the rotor will no longer spin with the shaft, the car just quits running. No harm, no foul.

If the set-screw drops out, (or more likely thrown out by centrifugal force) then it can damage the rotor button and cap as it get tossed around. $60 of harm, no foul.

Use Blue Loctite, it's not as strong as the Red.

good luck
JM

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought your were asking if a brake rotor fell off. My answer to that would be catostrophic failure.

Heh, I don't think a BRAKE rotor could just 'fall out'. The caliper and studs hold it roughly in place... that's like saying what if the engine fell out. It would have to crush the mounts and the legs holding it up. Not very likely...

My crap-tastic situation with the rotor in the cap... yeah... plausible. we've seen pics. I will tend to it soon. Car drove great today though. =)

When the set screw on my rotor became stripped, I bought several replacements from the local fastener store for less that a buck.

You missed the humor in the situation with the brake rotor falling off.

If the rotor falls off while the engine is running It will cause a tear in the space time fabric and you will be sent to the year 1955 and see Doc Brown and the invention of the flux capacitor

rotors fly off

I had a distributor rotor come off(it was only a friction fit, not screwed down) on a Lada that I was racing back in the 70's. I was doing well over 6000rpm,maybe 7000, at the time and the distributor cap fragmented as if a grenade had been in there.

Having recently experienced this situation.... twice.... it means your stuck on the side of the road. I put blue loctitie on it and it has been fine. The car sputters and then stalls out.

I have a spare hub and rotor and set screw (hub, rotor is firmly affected to this hub) and an 8mm in the glove box... though I should put a dab of loc-tite on the whole thing already installed.
