Headlight electrical

I have read clarks garage write up and will follow procedure tomorrow. Checking here first My headlight will go on and pop up but will not retract. My taillights and my dash lights are out fuses are ok. I have spent half the night reading post with the same problems with no real resolution at the end. I did see 2 posts that mentioned the Blue wire at the fuse panel was shorted. Has anyone else found this to be the case?
cliffnotes: headlights work.. go up.. won't go down
dashlights and rear taillights are out as well
Fuses are ok

guessing here

Switch? The switch is common to the sytems affected. Remove it by reaching waayyy up into the dashboard and squeezing the tabs. Then check for power going to the hmmm..on my car it is the red/green wire that controls the down circuit. Also check for power going to the rear lights. The dash dimmer is integral to that switch as well. Check continuity after you clean all the connections on the back of the switch and in the socket.

Good luck.

Do you have a multimeter? It makes diagnosing electrical problem MUCH easier.

Since we aren't mind readers and you dont have the information posted, what year car?

I think you had asked this on another forum too and it was suggested to replace the switch.

It is a 1984 944/1 If someone could tell me how to edit my car and location I would love to do so. I cannot find my profile settings anywhere.. Oh yeah can I pull the switch out by prying from the front or does it have to be released from the back?

Check your ground connections at the switch - they tend to work loose and if you lose good ground your headlights won't come down. Be careful tinkering with this part of your wiring, because many early 944 electrical fires are the result of this problem. When you've got it teched out, install more grounds and the problem will vanish. Ground wires are all brown. Also, pop out the blues connector behind the fuse panel. I'll bet you'll find burned spots on it. It's easy enough to replace with some time and a soldering gun. The switch itself can be rebuilt, as the contacts inside benefit from a light sanding. When you take it apart try not to lose the balls and springs.

Good advice - don't lose your balls!

Good luck!

Just had this happen as well. Slam is right on this. The blue connector is part number OEM-171971971B If you need a new one. I did as it burned right though it!
Also consider upgrading the headlight wiring to something like this http://www.rennbay.com/porsche-944-headlight-relay-harness-p-111.html?osCsid=a245af4fdf2f0253ee7de84f166c9f2d

MUCH Cheaper then fixing the aftermath of a fire... Trust me on that one.
