Nav system
 

Who has installed one? I dont mean the little portable ones. Wanting to know who has installed a headunit one or one of the hideaway units.

I'm looking to see what you used for the VSS (vehicle speed signal) connection. mine is working great, but dont have guidence until I can get the vss hooked up.

for a nav system, you wont need the vehicle speed signal - the nav system will be pretty accurate, provided you get a decent one, to within a couple kph / mph...

i just installed a full fledged computer into my Mazda... not a hard job to do at all.

Actually with all high end ones, you do have to have it, otherwise the guidence/turn by turn doesn't work.

I recently installed a Pioneer Divac D3 and it did not need the VSS to respond to within a few feet. As long a speed pulse is not connected it also allows me (with one other slight modification) to view the DVD front and back while moving.

This is just the nav so dont have to worry about the dvd. That's easy to bypass, just put the parking brake wire to ground.

Seperate nav unit, not part of the HU. Nav works great, just dont get turn by turn without the vss.

The Pioneer is weird. I tried the parking brake wire to ground w/ a switch but it still sensed movement even w/ the VSS disconnected. I then used a STDP switch to ground the VSS and Parking Brake wires. The unit would work 2-3 times then hang up and have to be rebooted. Also reaching into the glove box for the switch was inconvienient. What I wound up having to do was move one of the pins on the primary molex connector to a different place. It precludes the use of a switch. The VSS is left disconnected. There are a ton of Pioneer forums that are very helpful. That particular unit lends itself to a lot of mods. The new Z series w/ the 30 Gig hard drive is supposed to be really cool. I just don't feel like spending $1300 my dealer cost / $1800 retail. Let me know if you still want to get together Monday to make the light harness, I have all the parts in a box except for the relays.

Talked with kenwood this morning. VSS cable HAS to have a signal (which means Garmin systems will too cause theirs is a Garmin system). For cars that dont have the ability then you need a speed pulse generator. I believe the impulse sensor for the speedometer on the late cars can do this, but not sure. Will try it this weekend sometime since the weather is going to be crappy.
