Gates is good, as is Contitech.

Stay away from Flennor. They have fitment issues. Ask me how I know.

without a doubt, gates

conti has had some occasional but not frequent, known issues with the belt they make for the 968 - not sure about the 944 - expensive though when they come up, so i'm not taking any chances

Anyone know what the OEM brand is? If I went to the dealer and got belts, what brand should I get?

I use Conti's. Gates is good too. Cheap belts (no name calling) are a death sentence. Replace AND inspect per Clarks and you are good 2 go.

Our sponsor sells Conti's. buy a pair and call it good. thier prices are pretty reasonable and the shipping is quick.

Is there a few Porsche guys in Ireland? My wife, who holds an Irish passport, my children and I will be making a trip there within the next couple years.

I vote Gates, i pulled it off of my 944 after 9 years and 60,000 miles without replacement, and i kept it because it still looks and feels like a brand new belt!!! i got the flennor on my car right now, i had no problem with fitment but the belt does look of inferior quality, i plan to switch it out after a couple of thousand miles. >>Whats the best timing belt money can buy?<<

One to fit a Miata or a 924 - 'cause they're not interference engines!!

Just kidding - still love the 944 series, just between 944s these days while out of the country.

I used to go with Contis for my 944 series cars. But normally, I never really had a problem with a belt of any brand truly wearing out before the usual interval at which I would preventively replace it anyway...not going to think of debating that interval here, of course - plenty of threads on that.

They tend to crack more from age than mileage IMHO.

Kosh,

You are asking 2 questions:

Hood pads: Right here on Pelican or the928leathershop. I have the leathershop's pads and they are excellent

Timing belt: Got to agree with most here; Conti, Genuine Porsche - Gates a distant 3rd.

actually, from the opinions above it's about even

gates was also one of the oem belts, as was dayco - conti was not - not sure about all of the models of the 944, but on the 968 there have been a number of problems with conti - i have personally seen 4 - not pretty

the key though is adjusting and changing regularly, increasing frequency with heavy use like track

I see Goodyear is making them now at a premium price to the Gates and Beck/Arnley brands. Any body used Goodyear yet?

Holy necrothread. Yes back in 08 the Gates was probably the best but now we have the kevlar belt that will last as long as two normal belt chages (maybe more) but off-course the supplier won't say that. Kevlar Timing Belt

OEM on my car was a Gates

Well, sort of. I have owned my car since new and the original belt is hanging in my garage. It is a Uniroyal which was bought out by Gates, I believe. The Gates belts that I have had since look dead-ringer like that original Uniroyal, not only the belt itself but even the size and font of the markings are the same.

Porsche does not have a belt factory that I know of; that is even if a belt has the name Porsche on it the belt was made by some belt making company-I suspect Gates but it may be several different companies I don't know. According to an article on OEM parts (by a rival parts haus in Arizona) car makers are required to have more than one supplier. I would feel most comfortable with Gates. See: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:eRWe20WQZF8J:www.gates.com/facts/documents/Gf000191.pdf+uniroyal+gates&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgMANjaUydtYaw0thHxDUvsrb3LcVwyE75VRy4a IwR7VrlzJE_3wrPXRk3pUSBmnc18sfP7q9HA5anV4iSL6cWqXc I2vAIRHIqqwXwLmPM9sNJTeZuyA4MvMKUXdLmWanihI-wJ&sig=AHIEtbT7TzPNU3zCdidplN6kr36m6xWfkg. My belt is the "HTD" in the article so was developed by Uniroyal (now Gates). Just my 2 cents.
