Looking at a 944
I have not had a chance to discuss the car with the owner yet. I might see him today. All I know is that it is 1984 944 5 speed in need of a transmission.
So first, is there a buyer's guide for a 944? Or can you offer some advice. Also, is there a manual. If the transmission has to be removed, mostly like I will do it myself (probably with some Pelicans). Any recommendations for a shop that will rebuild a 944 tranny and approximate cost? Thanks,

www.clarks-garage.com has shop manual that will take you step by step through replacement. My personal feeling is to look for one that doesn't need a trans rebuilt. The labor is over 16 hours to get it out and replace clutch while there, rear main seal ect. The clutch kit alone is 700 + for all the parts the trans I am not sure but you can expect to be spending over 2000 to have someone else do and get car running. I am sure others here will break it down for you.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-03.htm Price a used transaxle at a wrecking yard or EBay-I saw a couple for $500 +-. To rebuild is not cheap. The owner may have said it was the transaxle and really meant the clutch. ballysdad is referring to the time and price needed to replace the clutch pressure plate, disc, rear seal and so on. This will take the PP team and a lot of pizza and kool aid. 16 hours turns into 3 days labor and 2 weeks part time. You are buying a roller---pay accordingly. A cosmetically good roller may bring $1000+. A crappy looking roller is $500 or less. Remember, your next fix is the head gasket ![]() GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S DD 1979 924 + 1977.5 924 + 1970 914 1.7 + MG Midget +++ gone but not forgotten |
