problem with cooling?

Hey guys when I bought my 84 944 the P.O. had told me not to put in coolant up to the minimum line as it all leaks out when the car gets hot and then you park it. He told me that a Porsche mech had told him that. Is this true? Now my question is this...I have noticed that when I drive in town and the temp rises...goes up to the quarter that I get an antifreeze smell. This only happens when it gets warm enough for the fan to kick on. I also notice that I get a little bit of anitfreeze leaking out when I park it after driving it and it has gotten warm. Anyone have this problem before and what could be causing this?

hoses are probably cracked form age and leak when the temp. gets hot. My first 944 would hold coolant all the way to the minimum line till i drove it and parked it. It would then dump about a liter all over my driveway. I found that the hose going to the coolant tank had contacted the alternator fan and put a hairline cut in the hose.

Good news is that a entire coolant hose set is only about 100 bucks and is easy to install if you remove the fan housing. Josh

Pressure test your coolant overflow tank cap. When they go bad it will cause the car to spit out coolant from the overflow hose when the car gets hot.

Takes about 2 hours to replace them all and you dont have to take the fan out to do it.

What side is the leak though? The water pump could be leaking.

the leak appears to be on the passenger side.

Check the hoses first and hope that it's not he water pump. It's on the right side for the water pump though.

The PO was definatly wrong though.

He probably meant, don't fill it to MAX when cold, which is stated in the owner's manual.

Well I finally got around to doing some checking and the water pump doesnt seem to have a problem. The hoses dont seem to be leaking from what I can see, but when I put my hand down to the bottom of the rad....seems to be leaking. I cant tell if its the rad or a hose that is leaking until I take the plate underneath the car off. What do you think?

I think you have a cracked end tank and will soon be shopping for a new rad.
