OK, I am stumped. I have an 85.5 944 that will only start with starting fluid. For some reason, my DME relay clicks when I turn the key but there is no power at the fuse, on either side of the fuse. i used my three-wire jumper from a prior attemp to check the relay and ran the fuel pump from the heated seat fuse.
first, why is there no power to that fuse? second, maybe the fuse I am picking power up from shuts off during start? third is that it runs fine once it is started. do these cars have cold start injectors like vw's? I almost think it is a vacuum problem to the fuel regulator. While it is running i can take of the vac line and there is a subtle drop in rpms. I have swapped fuel pressure regulators from my 951 and nothing different. I have used Clark's site extensively and need some field input... thanks, scott |

Trying to work for parts!

vacuum leak wont have anything to do with a no start. only comes into play after the car is running.
Has the car ever run since ownership? Sounds like the DME is bad. Does the tach bounce when starting? If not then check the speed/reference sensors. Does the car start if you jumper the dme relay?

I will give the jump on the DME relay a try. In the past while trouble shooting the fuel pump, I jumped the relay, swapped it for the one in my 86 951, and jump the alarm. thing is, it will run after the initial boost from starting fluid and can be restarted repeatedly for a while w/o issue.
also the fuel reg makes noises like gurgling... thanks! |

oh another factor:
the gasket on my fuel gauge sender assembly was really jacked up.. like melted! i opened it there so i could suck out the varnish. this car 140k and was ridden hard and put away wet. body is good, engine needs love once it runs (seals on the cooler) and the hatch done, but i am excited to have a 944 for a 'beater car'! i can at last park the truck and the 911!!! |

Thanks for the tip on thhe tach! I hadn't realized that Porsche used those sensors on the 944s too. The tach doesn't move when cranking so this weekend I am going to take extra set of new sensors for my 911 (same part) and give it a go. Thanks again!
