Steering Rack Seals
Apparently my steering rack seals are leaking. Any ideas on how much this costs to fix and what is involved?

I keep trying to get my rack outta my heap to fix it, but I've been too busy to do it.
Its about $100 worth of seals to do it yourself. Theres a couple write ups at: http://www.arnnworx.com/SteeringRack.htm http://www.rennbay.com/psrsealkitfull.html Good luck

For only $80 more you can get a rebuilt rack with a lifetime warranty from autozone. It's not an easy rebuild, why bother with it?

Anyone know what the labor would be like to have this done?
Also, hpservertech do you have a link to that rack or know where I can view it online? |

Sorry out here in hicktown there isn't an autozone, and I'm an automotive student using my 944 as a daily driver.
It sounded like a good weekend challenge for bragging rights if I get it done.

amirpc,
Pls update your signature line and let us know your car. Autozone does ship. www.AutoZone.com For the best PS rack replacement procedure go to www.Clarks-Garage.com MrWrong. As interesting as replacing the seals sound, if done wrong you have taken a lot of time doing it twice. A rebuilt is about $200 incl tax with a limited lifetime warranty LLT and get tie rod ends if yours have cracked rubber. The school should have an alignment setup. For a real DIY test, do a "string" home alignment test and compare it to the shop/school. You do need a rear Porsche rear toe in adjuster or other tools the school may not have. http://www.etoolcart.com/porschetoe-inadjusterp221.aspx If you still want to reseal yourself, you can buy the kit here: http://www.***********/cgi/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eallzim%2eco m%2facatalog%2f&WD=steering%20power&PN=Steering_Rack_Reseal_Kit_924S_944_T_S_968%2ehtm l%23a944_2e347_2e011_2eXX#a944_2e347_2e011_2eXX GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S DD Last edited by John_AZ; 09-29-2008 at 08:18 PM.. www.autozone.com as mentioned.
You have to have the right tools to do the job right. it's not a job for the DIY. I've been in the sticks before and have always found an autozone, kregan, pepboys, autozone within an hour of pretty much anything. It's your money obviously, but it's just not worth the time or effort, or the money.
