Reinstalling A/C in 944 T
I'm getting an 86 944T this week that has had the A/C removed and a delete bracket installed. I've already ordered a new compressor and a new evaporator for it. The seller has all of the original parts, but the evaporator I know for sure is bad.
How bad is it to reinstall the A/C? Is this something I could do, and then take to a shop and have them charge it? Does anyone have any links with more info on this? |
Depends on what the PO took out.. If only the compressor is removed and the AC lines are still installed shouldn't be too bad. You will also need a dryer for sure..Are you converting to 134a or keeping it R12? www.clarks-garage.com may be of some help..

I'm not familiar with the term "dryer." I'm looking at the service manuals for the 944 T and the components are like fresh air blower, vacuum unit, heating valve, vacuum supply reservoir, relay for compressors, compressor, fluid reservoir, condenser, vacuum unit for heating valve...
What am I missing? I've already read all of the info on clarks-garage but its more about troubleshooting a bad A/C then doing an installation of one. What are the tradeoffs involved with staying R12 rather than converting? |
The Receiver Dryer is placed in the air conditioning system in order to collect any moisture in the system. Over time, the Receiver Dryer can lose it's effectiveness, causing excess moisture to build up in your a/c system. It is also highly recommended that the Receiver Dryer be replaced any time the a/c system is opened up to outside air. Look in the parts section of this webpage and see what you will need.
R12 is colder but harder to come by they don't sell to the public anymore in US..R134a is under higher pressure uses different fittings to charge and you can buy at the local auto parts store and install yourself. |
R12 can be purchased from a shop that has some left or there are products aftermarket like "freeze 12 " that you can use but take different guages to install freon. I would convert out of ease of getting 134a and the possibility that your new system may leak and need to be refilled more than once. Make sure you get the system vaccumed out before you install refrigerent

Seems like I should pick up a receiver dryer and a set of O-rings from Pelican then before I start? Total is like $50, so thats not too bad.

The evaporator will most likely be the hardest to install. It's not hard by any means, tedious, yes, hard, no. You will need o-rings where ever the system has been opened, and that will probably be everywhere if all the lines are no longer on the car.
I didn't see an expansion valve on you list, nor a low pressure/high pressure switch. |
