Just replaced timing and balance belts on 87 944 with automatic tensioner on timeing belt. Getting a whine from one or both belts. Should I worry about this? Do I need to readjust? Can I drive and see if it will loosen up. How many miles? Thanks.

The "whine" normally comes from the balance belt. Usually too tight. The balance shaft idler pully should be set at a point barely/if at all touching the belt. Since you mentioned the work was done by someone else, you should go back. The cam or timing belt needs to be readjusted after about 1500 miles as well.
The newly manufactured belts do not stretch like the original '80s. The readjustment for me is a safety measure.

Next, the balance shaft marks. The upper balance shaft notch is on the back of the pully and is set at about 1 PM. The lower balance shaft notch is on the back of the pully and is set at about 7 PM. If you replace the belt follow www.Clarks-Garage.com procedure or you will have a vibration issue.

Can't go back he came to me. Will be back to adjust timing belt. Any problems with leaving the balance belt whine for 1500 miles till he comes back?? Thanks!

When i replaced the balance belt on my 86 944. I also had a slight whine from the belt.
I checked the tension over and over again, and since then i have driven about 5000 miles without problem.
I still have a slight whine from the belt but i like the noise from it now.

If the "whine" is very loud, then that is probably not good since it means the belt is tensioned too tight. If too tight, then it will wear the parts down and possibly break the belt. Try what was suggested above. If nothing else, you will get some practice and become a pro at it. Rework is not a bad thing after all, and take your time. I've done this procedure many times and still have to do it once or twice to get it right.

Good luck.
