924s drifter out, mr2 in, 924s again soonish!!!!

My life story for the last year:
Hey to all 924 and 944 owners! Its been incredibly long since ive posted and ive got to say I miss this place a lot! I sold my 924s just about a year ago and dear god i won't say it was a mistake, but it was (and still is i hope) an amazing car. Sold it to a guy who was very excited to fix the body, paint, and interior that i felt i was too inexperienced and poor to deal with on my own. I also was just getting depressed watching my friends slap ksport coilovers on their imports for under a grand while coilovers for me were gonna be more than double that. If only i knew then what i know now about fabricating and cnc machining id have laughed at the aftermarket!

I bought a clean 1987 toyota mr2 shortly after sayin goodbye to the porsche and Im utterly shocked at the capabilities of this car stock. I had been practicing drifting the porsche since the previous june about once a week and i really got used to limited slip, lots of torque, turbo sways, and the excellent weight balance. I immediately hated the mr2 cause it has the opposite of all those things. The engine/trans sits right between the rear struts, and theres no weight up front and i swore to my friends that i'd never drift the car. then i learned the joys of clutch kicking, e-braking, and entry speed!!!!! I got a race seat and maxed out my camber, got an intake and used tires on the rear with a gypsy alignment and man this car absolutely is insane by my standards! I'm having the time of my life in it.

Anyhoo i still work part time at the Porsche shop here in Tucson, my boss, a 914-6 racer might frown a bit on my car (he hasn't seen it in action though) but i still love porsches of all types. mostly 944's though. I must have another 924s again within the next year though, and it's going to become a true beast with my new tools :-)
-Race seat steering wheel, 4-6 point cage
-Individual throttle bodies
-Mega squirt
-Balance shaft keeping them in my car mod :P
-Coilovers adapted from some other car
-Delrin Bushings, roll center adjusters and bump steered
-Rims and tires

You are all awesome people and i'll come around more often!
-Gabe

I would be interested in hearing your plan for individual throttle bodies... never seen it done on a 944 engine.

Congratulations Gabe.

Why not add an Eaton M45 blower-supercharger on the 924S like member Lance1a from Oxford UK. plans to do with his '86?

Again good luck on your new business as well

One guy did it before that I know of and I know of a shop whos installing them on their 2.5l engine that revs past 9000rpm.

To see benefits from ITBs the engine has to be pretty high strung.

Those are not individual throttle bodies. Those are weber carburetors. Big difference.

The Bosch Motronic ECU setup these cars have stock cannot be configured to run individual throttle bodies. You would need to go with a MoTeC system or something similar to do this, along with a cam sensor and lots of other little bits. The ECU alone starts at around $3000.

Just making sure you know what your are in for...

I thought the Bosch unit could be programmed for just about anything?

Megasquirt is a cost effective alternative that works.

Around 400 for a megasquirt sounds a little friendlier The flanges and throttle body setup will be the easy part, the ECU tuning and sensor outputs will be a little harder

I've had two MK1 MR2s...

I did the second one right... twosrus suspension (complete tie rods), koni adjustables on all 4 corners, eibach pro springs, prothane bushings, TRD alignment, etc etc.

Fun little car, but no matter how nice I made it, it was still an older looking, small Toyota.

Where I am in life, it is better to have a 'classic', clean Porsche, that when I put time or money into I can be proud to be seen in. The 944 still isn't where the MR2 was in terms of performance (front shocks feel soft in corners, power steering leak, etc), but when it is, will be much more rewarding.

for a while after i bought my 924 i was a bit jealous of the 944's agressive more modern looks but after a year i really fell in love with the narrow body of the 24. I just like the weird 80's styling of lots of cars for some reason

the porsches are more refined and sylish that the 1st gen mr2's, but i think what i'm most happy about is how i went to a car that offers so much less than the 944 to begin with but my driving skills have quickly surpassed what they were in the other car. Of course the limits are higher in the 44 so that's why i want another one!
