exhaust raspy

Recently i discovered that my Cat converter has become broken and rattles. So today i decided against replacing it and just to have a straight pipe installed from the down pipe to the muffler. Im not happy with the sound it creates...

The car is very raspy at anything above 1700 rpm. Is there anything i can do to fix this? Will installing a glasspack / resonator in place of the test pipe get rid of the rasp? Is there any difference between a glasspack or a resonator? If i have to ill weld another cat back on the car, but ive been trying to avoid this.

My last question is what size pipe am i looking on on a stock 87 NA

I have stock muffler -- 87 944 N/A

Thanks!

yes - put a cat back in there - the environment will thank you, and they do not restrict the exhaust enough to worry about unless this is a track car, and in fact in many cases causes torque loss when removed

resonators are generally perforated tubes surrounded by packing material, inside a shell - these generally smooth out a tone, but do not generally add much back pressure

glass packs are similar, but have louvered tubes instead of perforated ones - these will smooth out the tone more, but at the expense of resistance

yeah if you want there to be no rasp, you will have to either put a glasspack in there or a catalytic converter. i currently have the stock catalytic converter and a flowmaster, and its a little loud but sounds great

The pipe after the cat I've measured to be about 2.25 in. , but it's probably metric or something... I don't know exactly if it's different in front of the cat, though.
