High idle?

I've owned the car for nearly a year and have had no major problems than regular maintenance but i've always wondered if it idled too high. when warm it holds around 1200-1400 and is anywhere between 1000-1200 when cold. is this normal?

if not, what could be causing it?

thanks,
Kevin

nope, car is supposed to idle at 950 for the u.s. spec car, you idle control valve is sticking, either clean out or replace

84 doesn't have an idle control valve, just a little soleniod tied to the A/c compressor.

Perhaps the O-ring is old and shrunk on the idle adjustment screw, or it just needs a turn clockwise to lower the idle, if it turns really easy, try to find a new oring, or pull it out and put a small amount of loctite on it ( just remember to set the idle before the loctite cures!!)

Perhaps the engine mounts are/were tired and someone raised the idle to reduce some of the chatter

I'll keep you from feeling lonely. My 84 does the same thing.

It's on my to fix list, but so far I haven't found any easy fix for it. I've only had this heap running for about 3 months now and there's still a pile of bigger issue that need addressing first.

if it isn't actually broke, i don't wanna have fix something. it hasn't hurt anything that i can tell so if it isn't going to, i'm not going to mess with it.
does that sound like a bad plan?
should i actually look into it?

after checking to see if you have a hose lose, grab a can of carb cleaner and squirt it around the intake looking for a vacuum leak
