924 de/track car.

Anyone here race their 924. I just picked up this old jalopy, and I think I am going to put together a budget de car. It has a hopped up 2.0 with webers small cam , and runs like stink . I gutted the interior. put in a roll cage , a momo seat, will get some harnesses in this weekend. This car will simply be for fun, as my buisness partner wants to learn to drive, so We are keeping the budget small. I am thinking koni sports, an addco rear sway bar, and some 205 50 14 victoracers for now. Any other good suggestions to make this car stick a little better?? Thanks

Yup - Vaughn is the man to talk to about 924 racing. He runs in ITB (i think) in SCCA.

Hi!

Yeah, OK... Sounds like the motor is not IT-compliant; at very least it would need stock CIS and cam. But that is only a consideration for actual competition in IT (which is definitely the place to go with a 2.0L car, IMO - we're kicking a$$), not DE.

I would highly recommend you ditch the 4-bolt disc/drum setup and upgrade to the early 944 4-whl disc setup - WAY better, lower maintenace, and easy to find race parts for (pads, mainly).

For the suspension: these cars lean badly. They really need spring rate. If you just use swaybars to deal with it, you'll have bad wheelspin problems trying to put the power down with an open diff. So it's much better (and can be cheaper) to add springs, which can allow you to adjust front ride height as well, and use coilovers in the rear. Rear coilovers are also not legal for IT, but can be swapped to larger T-bars later.

I don't recommend Koni's; sure they're cheap and readily available, but you can do proper custom Bilsteins up front and QA1 coilovers in the rear for about the same price, and get a much higher-quality end result, more durable. Konis just can't take the high spring rate that makes these cars work (I'm using 600# front springs with 34mm hollow rear bars). Check my posts on the 924board.org forum, under Performance Upgrades - I posted details of part #'s, valving, and sources for the shocks.

I am only running the 19mm rear cup car bar; cheap (about half the price of the Weltmeister bars), adjustable, and high quality (Porsche OEM!). That's enough adjustability for my car.

You will definitely also want to deal with all the rubber bushings in the suspension, including the upper strut mounts... but use plastic (delrin, poly graphite, etc) for now to keep cost down. I'm running a full-spherical setup, but that's drastically more money.

The other thing is the trans... nor sure which one you have, but ultimately the later Audi-style 5-speed is the way to go. But the 4-speed will keep you going for some time.

That should be enough to think about and keep you busy for a bit!

Vaughan- By any chance do you know the at-the-wheel spring rate of those 34mm hollow rear t-bars? I am trying to find a chart with that all listed and can't.

And where did you get the Cup car sway? Lucky find?

The cup car rear bar was new from... well, not from this site's sponsor. I'll PM you.

The rear t-bars give me an effective rate of 553 lbs/in, according to the Tech Session article (vs. 126 for the stock option (std for 944) 23.5mm rear bar, a mere 48 for the base 18.5mm bar, and 335 lbs/in for the 30mm solid bars I used previously).
