Converting to manual window winders

Has anyone run across any instructions/write-ups about how to install the window winding mechanisms? I have power windows currently, which I'm converting to manual winders (I have the parts already). Haynes says get someone else to do it, and there's nothing that I can see on Clarke's.

Anyone done this before?

i don't know... but i'm very interested in finding out, as i'd LOVE to lose the power windows.

This may help.

Here is what I did to do the conversion.

I got a set of 924 manual winders.

From what I gather, these are early 924 winders. They have that white block on the end which will not work with the 944 windows.

It needs to have this end on it.

After a bit of thinking, I decided to sacrifice my electric roller. The motor was dead anyways. The ball joint on the early roller was way too large to move the nylon roller from the electric winder. To get the nylon/plastic roller off, I soaked it in boiling water for a few minutes, then pried it off with a screwdriver. The first one I tried broke, because they are so brittle.

The ball joints are put thru the hole and then peaned on the back, like an old time rivet.

So ground off the back of the manual and electric rollers and hammered out the ball joints on a vice with a punch and ball-peen hammer.
You can just see the outline of the stud of the ball joint.

Continued:

Put the smaller ball joint thru the hole and peen the back.

This is what it now looks like

This is tool I used to peen the back. It is a homemade tool, that I got an estate sale.

Take the nylon roller you popped off the electric winder and put it in boiling water for a few minutes. Then carefully press it on the ball joint. I used a block of wood and gently leaned on it till it popped on.
Do not hammer it on, it will break! Don't ask how I know and it was a gentle tap with the hammer too.

Holes needed to mount the manual winders are already in the door. The manual winders bolts in using the hardware from the electric winder.
