931 turbocharger id. problem

I'm trying to identify a turbocharger that I bought for a 914 turbo project. The number on the turbo is 5326 970 6407. I looked on 924.org and that number falls in between the 80 and 81 numbers. I've heard that they're not interchangeable, so I want to get this right. It looks brand new, it was in a Holbert Porsche box when I bought it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Google the turbo's number and you will find several sources describing what you have. Alternatively, you can post over at 924.org and tap the experts there...

A couple of sources show it as coming from a 79-82 924 turbo, or from a 82+. I don't think either of them are right, well, maybe the 82+ but not the 79-82. Does it have a triangular or rectangular mounting flange? A triangular flange is almost positively a 924 part. Post a pickie if you can. Also there should be a porsche part number on the little blue or red tag somewhere. It should start with 931... something

The "not interchangable" comment likely has to do with the exhaust manifold-to-turbo flange. There were a couple of configurations and IIRC each one only works properly with the matching exhaust manifold. If it turns out you have to use the exhaust manifold, you want the later manifold (flange) style because porsche solved some leaking/cracking problems with the later style. However, if you don't end up using the exhaust manifold, the interchangability issue might not be a problem for you because you're in the realm of customization anyway. That being said, if this is indeed going on a 914, all that probably won't matter to you other than you'll have to identify the right gasket to match the flange you have...

Here's a thread the mentions the 6407 in particular...
