Starter

I'm running my traps and have either a weak battery or my starter is pulling too many amps. With the engine warm it the starter pulls 300 amps measuring from the terminal wire while cranking it over. The battery has 12.5 volts and with the car running has 13.5, so the alt is charging it fine. I load tested the battery and it checked out fine that way too. I may have a bad cell on the battery, or a plate or whatever. Is 300 amps too high?

I could not find information on your Q about 300 amps. There is a troubleshooting section (4) in this rebuild post that may help.

Update!!

First and foremost, thank you John_AZ for the link.

It was the starter. I found that the starter case was loose, not terribly loose, but enough which raised a red flag for me. I removed it, and following directions from the aforementioned link, I rebuilt it my self. The hardest part was getting the armature back in place. In all it's a, well it's 5pm my time and I started at 1pm and drank beer all day, so I guess it was a zero on a 10 scale.

No new parts were bought.

Brake/carb cleaner, some 400 grit sand paper, I used my dremel on the brushes, some silicon sealant, a few tools, 1 helper to hold back the brushes and insert the armature, assemble and it was done.

I've never heard this car crank over faster, and that is over the course of 17 1/2 years. No doubt it's the original starter, unless it gave out in the first 8 years of the car's life, which is unlikely.

I'll do a write up later if there is a need. It's pretty straight forward, and well worth it.

Thanks again John_AZ.

Man, bump the key and it fires up!! I'd have done this along time ago if I'd known it would turn out this good.

How many amps does your "rebuilt" starter pull now?

I'll test it tomorrow and let you know. Saying it was rebuilt is not exactly accurate, but I don't think I've ever installed a rebuilt that works this good. I can't imagine that the the brushes will ever need to be replaced, there's a lot of meat on them. It kind of makes me wonder what exactly is replaced when they rebuild them, assuming no internal components were busted.
