Valve springs

How do i know if the springs are bad? I'm guessing they are because at around 5000 rpm engine sounds like *****. Ive replaced the distributor and soon to replace the rotor and the wires. Ill try and get a recording of what it sounds like if it helps but it sounds like its almost firing incorrectly or all at the same time? is this normal?

I would think ore likely than the valve springs being bad would be the lifters being bad.

What type of oil are you using?

10w 30 or 40, but it was exactly the same with 5w 30

well 5w30 is way too thin. should be using at least 40 weight.

maybe it's a dead lifter?

i know thats what the po had in it. i checked and its 10 w40 that we put in because the oil pressure would drop and the light would go on which no longer happens with the new oil.

after driving it again and letting it warm up i can feel feedback in the gas pedal above 5k rpm

Someone recommended bad springs and thats what my "co" worker guessed also how would i know the difference and what should i look for beside the obvious if i decide to start takin things apart?

The only way to check them is to pull the head off, remove the valves and check each spring for "squareness" and compression weight. The "squareness" is a check to make sure the sides of the springs are perpendicular to the top and bottom faces. Any speed/engine shop should be able to test the compression weight.

If you need the specs on the inner/outer comp weights, drop me a line and I can dig them up for you.

More than likely it is the lifters, it takes ALOT of abuse to kill the Porsche double springs in these engines!

Hope it helps!
