Question Any members in Ontario Canada? & water pump..

OK,
I'm about to embark on the water pump/timing belt/roller job adventure on my 951. It's a shame, since it was done 2 years and less than 1000 miles ago but the water pump started making a sickening grinding noise and dribbling coolant.

I just want to know if there's any members close by that would want to lend some tools and/or a hand once I have all my parts together?? I'll reimburse your time or tool loan in beer

One other question I had about the job is: do the new pumps come with the thermostats? Or do I have to buy them separate? The New A/M LASO pump (p/n: 951-106-921-X-M59) here looks like it comes with the thermos and seals.

Oh, I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.. .

replies, PMs or emails appreciated

Try looking for a member called Eldorado (name's Kyle). Good guy - in spite of being an Easterner!

Pumps don't automatically come with the thermostat, so check with your supplier. Also make sure you get extra spacers for the thermostat, just in case.

Have fun!

Well agent I'm in Alexandria which is about an hour east of Ottawa, lol depending if I follow the speed limit that is. I need the timing belt and rollers done on mine too but i will only do them in the spring I think. I found a great mechanic in Vars that works on Porsches. I got his name from a guy that stores his 911 close to my house. I can give you his number if you want. Or maybe we can meet up int the spring and see if we can figure some stuff out on our cars.

I belive Kyle had his done by a mechanic. I did as well but I would be interested in doing it myself if we could get a reliable person who has done it many times before to help.

slam- thanks for the info! I guess westerners arent ALL bad.

vdorman, ya if you could PM me his name that'd be sweet. I know a shop that does German stuff too, but I hate paying for labour haha.

I'll let you guys know if I end up getting the tools, that way when you're ready to do yours you know someone that has the tools and has done one..

although, I'm not taking a trip to barrie just to do a wp/tb job lol

anyways, I was gonna wait 'til spring to do it, but apparently the car doesn't want to wait that long..

I have never used Marcus but I hear he is good.

I have also heard Mark Motors in Ottawa is good but it will probably be pricy.

I would offer my garage, but I do not do the belts myself. Just too much risk.

In Ottawa, you can also use AutoImport. They do mine on my 951. Ask for Jason. He knows 944s inside and out.

Mark Motors is not bad, but it is really expensive and, IIRC, they only have one guy who knows 944s.

autoimport did the job 2 years ago, but 10hrs at near 100 bucks an hour= ouch!
I'd rather save that $ for some konis or something..

So I guess I'll just order the tools, and dive in.. and now you all will know where to find them when you need yours done!

$1K seems high if the belts and rollers are okay. If it just the WP, it should be less. Their rate is $89.50 per hour.

FYI - you are going to spend $300+ on tools if you go the Arnnworx way or $700+ for a Porsche tensioning tool and wrenches.

Yeah I priced the Arnnworx tools... I'm just waiting to hear back, but it should be under 300 shipped. I'm doing the rollers, maybe the seals.. we'll see when I get in there. The belts are getting changed for sure.. I made THAT mistake once on a 300zx i had that seemed to have a perfectly good timing belt, going by service history and inspection... about a year after i replaced just the water pump, the belt tossed a couple teeth, just enough to destroy both heads.
I like doing stuff "while i'm in there", I'd rather only have to take the front of the car apart once.

clarks-garage.com is a good reference source for belt changes.

if you take your time, its not too bad.

IIRC the time to do belts and rollers by the book is @ 6 hours max. add another hour or two for the waterpump.

have fun!

Ok, so I thought I'd update this quickly.
I got the tools from arnnworks and they worked flawlessly. I was a little put off by the looks of the tension gauge but once it was assembled it was easy to use, accurate, and the instructions were thorough. It was under $300 for everything, and worth every penny - especially the pin wrench, that thing is worth its weight in gold. The flywheel lock was very handy to have as well.

It took me about 7 hours to do the t-belt, balance belt, rollers and waterpump, but part of that was due to the seal for the new thermostat not fitting properly into the waterpump housing. I wasted a bunch of time sorting that out. Oh and subtract 4 minutes to wolf down a happy meal.

I got everything buttoned up and tensioned properly, nothing was a major pain to do - pretty standard stuff.. I should've picked up some new plugs though, but I'll do that in the spring. Snow is coming and she'll be put away Monday til spring!
