sounds like a belt scrape..check belts..then check the timing belts too..all u have to do is remove about 7 bolts to take the black cover off..and look for scrape marks...thats what i would do..

i already have the front cover off to check because one of the rollers looks incredibly close to the belts, is this common. also that didnt catch the sound i was looking for it decided to clear up when i recorded it :( or :)

what are some fixes for rubbing belts i noticed when i changed the rollers and belts and w/pump that one of the rollers on the timing belt was much larger than the previous. which just so happens to be the one that its most likely rubbing against should i put the old roller back in and see how it fits? any one else have this problem?

btw i have an 87 but no auto tensioner which i have no idea why its gone im thinking one of the po changed things up or it was because it was bought it sept of 86.

More often than not the belt scrape is caused by an inner timing cover that's not sitting right. And if your timing belt is too wide, it may be for an S.

Do you mean the black plastic idler roller that's bolted to the water pump? If you look in the Pelican parts catalog, that part was 32mm diameter up through 86, and changed to 46mm sometime in 87. The larger roller seemed to go along with the added belt guard that's bolted to the WP. Do you have the guard? It could be that the bolt hole on the WP is drilled in a different place depending on which WP version you have. If it's the updated one, it should have the large roller and the guard. If it's the early style one, it has the small roller and no guard.

Here's the guard and larger roller.
