Newbee Questions
Hi Folks! I just purchased a 1990 S2 Cabriolet with 57000 miles on it. The car is beautiful, Guards Red, Florida car. I have the timing belt/water pump job scheduled for replacement next week. Questions: The water pump only has about 20000 miles on it. Should I replace it anyway? Also, I live in Pennsylvania, and I just changed the oil to Castrol Syntec 10W-30. Is this OK for winter? Thanks-AJ

If it were me i would replace it for peace of mind. I run Valvoline High milage 10w30 with ZDDPplus additive in my N/A and turbo.

OK. So 10W-30 is fine? I plan to use something thicker for summer, unless this is unnecessary. How do you feel about 10W-30 for summer?
Also, I hear a whir sound after I start up the car and take off for the first time. The whir only occurs once, right when I first start off, and only for a second. Is this normal? It sort of sounds like a spooling sound. I forgot to ask another question, too! Sorry about this! My drivers side door does not close as crisply as the passenger side. I have to lift up on it and close it just right for it to close nicely on the first try. Any suggestions on how to easily adjust this? Thanks!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1227726840.jpg |
http://clarks-garage.com/ great resource! especially for just buying the car!

Congrats on that Beauty!
I am not sure what kind of sound you mean? Yes, I think the 10W-30 is fine. |
It's like a whizzing sound, happens only when I first start up the car and take off, and only for a second.
I referred to it as a "spooling" sound earlier. Could it be some part of the fuel delivery system? What about the auto tensioner-does this work like my description, or is it always auto-tensioning? Thanks!SmileWavy |
Beautiful car. Welcome aboard!

Yes the tensoner is always working, I doubt it could make a noise like you discribe?
Can you shoot a video & provide a short clip with audio? |
Thank You! I can try to record the sound, but it is not very loud...do you remember the old SST toys from the late 60's early 70's? Remember when you would pull out the stick? It sounds like that! It almost sounds like it is priming something...
|
What are the odds?
Yes, I use to have one of those ole SST's...A priming discription is quite telling...What could it be? Fella's? |
Is the sound coming from the back or front of the car? I believe the fuel pump (if it's making any discernible sound will come from the passenger rear seat area (or at least that's where my early 1985's fuel pump sound comes from, periodically). Fuel pumps will also make a sound without the car running so you may see if it briefly happens when you turn the key on (but don't start the car).
Your description doesn't sound like what I'm about to say but when I first got my 944 I thought it had an unusual amount of driveline (gear) noise. Multiple mechanics (none of them hacks) have told me it's normal. ...also from the rear, of course. Then I suppose there might be the cooling fans or the a/c clutch or similar (front). JR |
Hi, if it were me I would save the money and just have the belts put on. Can't help on your other questions though.
|
Thanks Folks! The sound appears to come from the right front somewhere, although I am not sure...
As far as the water pump goes, I might wait until the next belt changes, which will be 30,000 miles. That would make about 50,000 miles on the current pump. |
does the car have ABS?
my thinking is ABS pump/system initializing |
Power steering pump?
|
may be the balance shaft belt you are hearing......rev it up a little and once it comes back to idle, you will probably hear it again. for the waterpump, if there is no abnormal sounds or looseness, its probably fine...but, its your car and your budget..
anyways, where at in pa, i'm right above cumberland MD |
