--project biuld / suspention setup question--
Whats up everybody on the Pelican parts Forum. I’m 20 and have been working on my 86 944 project for about 2 1/2 years now since I was 17. I have pictures but I have yet to take them off the camera. I have other priorities. This is my first post on my new member handle! So first let me tell you what I have done so far.
-Rebuilt Bottom End -New Turbo 8v head -new Valve guides -new valve seals -2mm larger valves -3 angle valve job -Port and polish which I did myself (you could do your hair lookin in the port) -Port and polished intake manifold port match to head -Port matched Exhaust Manifold -new fuel pressure regulator -New thermo Valve switch -new headers -new timing belt and gears -new turbo head gasket complete set -new clutch -new clutch master -new clutch slave cylinder -new 928 alternator (more amps) -new plugs, wires, cap, rotor (performance stuff 8.5mm wires) -MSD blaster coil -Power steering delete (screw dealing with the pump, plugged the rack hehe) -new short throw gear selector -new rotors drilled and slotted, hawk ceramic pads- not cheap -Stainless steel braided brake lines -full one piece bucket Recaro style seats (17lb combined weight) -2 3" 5 point camlock harnesses -momo steering hub adaptor for suede wheel with disconnect - I probably missed a few things who cares, the car is very clean, with a clean motor which I have painted. Add-ons for the future: suspension. the body pieces and paint job, rollcage, rear seat delete (cuz they're fcuking useless) with a custom REMOVABLE fiberglass subwoofer enclosure, many carbon fiber pieces. and hopefully the NASA 944spec prepared class!!!! Okay now the suspension question. For a street track setup on a budget I’ve been looking at 250lb weltmeisters with new KYB gr2 gas-ajust shocks. I cannot afford the konis... they are way beyond what is on budget. I need to know what size rear torsion bars to get to have a well balance suspension, weltmeister sells many sizes. hollow or solid? what mm? also a strut bar. Do they make rear strut bars? are there any that are less than 300!! any other AFFORDABLE suspension add ons to consider. I want to have a somewhat quick great handling car to get more speeding tickets with and track race. god Porsche part prices are killin me but that’s what sets us apart from the average enthusiasts! Keep in mind I am a college student and I have had nothing handed to me nor help with this build. I paid for all of my parts including the car itself with my own money and also my side car (the hoopty) which I drive when my 944 is incapacitated. so just note I have to budget everything down to the shipping and eBay motors is my best friend. I need a sponsor haha!. Well I have frequented this site for years and I’m finally a member now. this is a great forum and I’m looking forward to interacting with all of you. thanks again Porsche Rulez! Go to the Clark's Garage site, look in Garage Shop Manual, then click Suspension Upgrades. That page has a wealth of information on suspension modifications. I'm researching what's next for my car and it's been extremely helpful.

I am more interested in "the hoopty"
When you download pictures from your camera, include one please. I do not think they have information on the '96 944 (? ![]() http://website.lineone.net/~dmsims/944t/SuspensionPreparation.htm Welcome John_AZ |

Koni or Bilstien are the only consideration for shocks in my books. I would see If you can pick up a used set. I got the front struts with new Koni inserts for my car fairly inexpensivly from the classifieds of Pelican.
For the 250lb springs I think the match is a 28 or 29mm rear torsion bar. You can also go with a hollow bar which will be lighter but about $100 more. I think you would be looking for a 30mm hollow bar. Have you looked at the procedure to replace the torsion bars? Its a PITA I have the KLA strut bar which I think looks fine. When I asked for opinions on it I was told that the more expensive bars just look better, but performs the same. I dont thing we need a rear strut bar as the rear floor is quite high and functions somewhat as a strut bar. |
