Lsd?

How can you tell if your car has a LSD? (in my case an 87 924S)

jack up both rear wheels and rotate one wheel by hand. If the other wheel goes in the same direction you have a limited slip if the other wheel goes in the opposite direction you have an open rear end.

The "S" should definitely have LSD. The easier way to test it is to see if you leave two black strips or jut one after a burn out

the above mentioned "in the air" procedure will only work on a clutch type lsd - it will not work on a torsen type - i have no idea what the 924 came with

LSD was optional on the 924S, it was only standard on the 951S.

And it would have came with a clutch type, same transmission as all the other 8v n/a series cars. The clutches wear out and if really bad, both wheels will not spin in the same direction. The 100% positive way to check is to look at the code on the top of the transaxle bellhousing, the prefix is 8Q (early trans) or 7V (late trans).

To add to the above post..

If you have your original owners manual, open it up..

There should be a sticker with the cars info and options on it..

if you see 220, then you have LSD.

My 944 didn't have the LSD option 220 code but I did have an LSD trans so someone added it along the way.

I've got a LSD transaxel wit a code that doesn't match any 944 NA or Turbo code, not sure what it is. Is a bit long legged for an NA in city traffic, but the gear ratios fit me once I'm moving.

Is the car supposed to be in gear, or not, for the wheel spin test?
