944 Oil pressure gauge

Hi All, my 89 944 2.7's oil pressure gauge goes straight to the top (5 on the scale) when I start the car and doesn't move from the top until I turn the car off and tap the top of the dash. I disconnected the wires to the oil pressure can but this made no difference - am I missing something or can someone offer some advice. Thank you in advance. JP

It sounds like your oil sending unit has gone bad. Check out Clark's Garage website for an excellent trouble shooting guide to eliminate your gauge as the problem before changing the oil sending unit. When you disconnect the wires from the sending unit the gauge will peg, that is normal. The higher the resistance (open circuit) the higher the gauge will read. So make sure your connections to the sending unit are good and clean.
