1983 944 Fuel gauge

Does anyone know what happen to the fuel gauge? Whenever I exit the ramp or turn a corner the fuel needle indicator wonders off and does not come
back to normal.

It works fine when I fill up the gas tank. Although, I replaced the whole combo
gauge 2 to 3 times with used ones.
May be it is time for new one?

maybe it's your sender that's sticking and not the gauge?

also check the wiring and the grounds.

That's definitely your sender. You can take the early ones apart (carefully) and clean the fine wire and sender bobbin that runs along it so's it doesn't stick. I think there's a how to on Clarkes for this.

When it happened , I replaced the fuel sender several years ago. As right now,
to keep the fuel needle gauge working at least normal I have to maintain
the gas in the tank above 3/4 level.

Thanks for the advice.

I had similar weirdness with my '83 gas gauge and replacing the sending unit didn't help.
I took the thing apart and cleaned the contacts, now it works fine.

Mine's iffy. The idiot light works, and I have anther 70-80 miles if it comes on. That's what works for me.

It's been that way since 1992.

There are a couple of cleaning procedures you could try. This one is in our Tech Section (radio button ^)
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_fuel_tank_sender_replace/911_fuel_tank_sender_replace.htm

OR the simple suggestion:

Have a gasket on hand before you start if you take it out.
