Power Window Mechanism Problems
 

Working on an 86 944.

I got the mechanism out:

The window went down but won't come back up.

• I swapped switches around and both are good and in working order.
  
• Removed the relay in the fusebox and jumped the circuit to eliminate the relay as a problem.
  
• There is 12V to the power connector at the motor, but the motor refuses to turn the gears. It will click if i hold the down/up button on for 10-20 seconds. Every 5 seconds or so, it gives off a double-clicking sound.

This is the first time the motor has apparently been removed as the plastic shield in the door is still in tact. There is a lot of rust however, but it was working fine for months. I think the motor is the problem.

Where do I go from here? We have another stupid snowstorm coming into town tomorrow night and the window has to be up. Currently, the motor is stuck in the window down position and nothing I can do will move it to the up position. Even if the motor doesn't work in the up position, that is fine, as long as the window is closed.

For now, I would wedge the window into the door so it is at least closed! I had to do that on one of my old 944s when the weather went sour. I used a 2x2 and wedged it inside the door to hold the window up.

Quick response: Should the gears be turnable with the motor still attached? We're going to attempt to power it outside the car later on and then we'll try removing the motor from the scissors and opening it up.

Porsche does some stupid stuff like including a SCREW as one of the mounting bolts that are now stuck in place and will round out. Also using those 6-sided star heads? GAH. Annoying as all else.

If all else fails, we will wedge the window up to survive the cold.

Try applying +12vdc to one of the motor connector pins and ground to the other. Reverse the connections to reverse direction. That test should tell you if the motor is good or not.

To remove that darn phillips screw, I use a hammer driven impact driver (from Sears, about $20). Otherwise, you are going to damage the screw. You do not need to touch that star screw.

If you have to put a peice cardboard in the glass area and put a peice of platic ove the window untill you see if the motor works ouit good. I have the motor if do end up needing one, or 2.

thanks for this post on motor testing. I was doing it all wrong, just applying 12 volts to each connector, and a ground via the door frame. will try it later, althought the other t4ests are all negative up to this point.

i assume you cleaned all the switch contacts? because with dirty contacts, all 3 window regulators i tried had gone down but not up.

After cleaning the contacts, my power windows worked great.

And update on this since the 10 months have passed:

What happened was that something had broken off and wedged itself in mechanism. We had to tear apart the entire contraption and remove what was stuck in there, lubricate it all back up, and put it back together. Afterwards, it operated perfectly. Put it back in and it's been working ever since!
