Intermediate shift lever repair

Hey all,

My 944 has a sloppy shifter that I've narrowed down to being caused by the worn plastic on the Intermediate shift lever on the transaxle.

As far as I know you can't just buy this plastic piece separately and replace it because it's all sold together when you buy a new intermediate shift lever.

My idea was to install a short shift kit much like this, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Porsche-944-951-S-TURBO-Short-Shift-Shifter-Kit-OEM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2 Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3 a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem 350147013597QQitemZ350147013597QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5 fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories, which is much more inexpensive as buying a whole new genuine Porsche shift lever as that would replace the worn part.

I would much rather have genuine parts but can anyone vouch for the durability and function of such kits.

Since you have eliminated most of the easy fixes...

Here is the www.clarks-garage.com page that shows the linkage and the last picture is the intermediate shift lever assembly.
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-07.htm

The "whole" assembly is expensive and I have asked if the plastic block could be rebuilt in the past.

Intermediate lever problem

There are a couple of short shift kits on the market and you should search for the members who have had success. The one point that comes up frequently is the need to redrill the linkage to meet the short shifter attachment pin. The good kits are praised for the shift feel.

Instructions for basic/similiar short shift kit - this is not a recommendation:

If my linkage was to get seriously sloppy, I would probably check EBay or a parts car.

Thanks John.

I read the thread you posted about the same question. That pretty much sums mine up as I have alot of side to side play in the shifter.

One of the members on that thread mentioned something about a machined aluminum block to replace the plastic one. Did you ever find any such parts in your search? I'm turning up nothing.

No,

I check once in a while when on EBay motors parts and accs. I often see the complete rear linkage and I may get one to see if I can put bushings in the plastic someday.

Since I have short shifters on my mind now I've been looking on the forums to see what people have been saying.

The one from BP Motorsports from the link above looks like it is built very well. I have also heard the unit from Schnell is a good performer as well.

If I were to guess judging from only the pictures I think I would lean toward the one from BP as it seems the block acting as the actual intermediate shift lever looks pretty tough and the unit from Schnell (Although I can't really tell too well from the picture) looks like only a thin steel plate.

Can anyone provide any insight or opinions on these two? I'm really looking into this as a replacement for a worn factory mechanism so reduced shift throw is more of a extra bonus rather than a desire.
