The more I have researched Motronic DME the more i realize that many of them have more in common than different. Some BMW DME have similar part numbers. I know the the chip on the DME would have to change but:
Are BMW DME's (direct swap)for Porsche one if you move the Porsche ship into the BMW DME? Is is there a list of DME that would swap between the makes with a chip change? What version of the Motronic DME did '83 944 use? M1.0 basic, M1.0 adaptive, M1.1? I've seen BMW DME's in the low 90 - 120$ range and Porsche from 200 - 400 used. I want to have a spare DME on the back burner should I need it and would like to find a less expensive spare even if it meant swapping a chip. in fact if it was not socketed I'd put a socket in it so I can make performance chip swapping easier. For those search mongers I did try and search and got great info but not to a question like mine. |

The '83 uses the multiple rom board that can be upgraded by using the old FRwilk adaptor board.
The rom ecu has the same part number as the slightly later ecu used in the 84-early 85 models that use a non-socketed prom. If you goto to www.frwilk.com you will find all the info you could ever need. For information on adapting a BMW unit for use with the 944 goto: http://www.powerprom.info/bmw027.htm If you need a spare early dme let me know, I keep a few spares. I would be willing to let one go for $100. -Nick
