porsche 944 fuse replacment
with the OEM fuses becoming harder to find, expecially in a pinch. im looking at taking out my dash to rewire a new alarm and was thinking about updating the fuse boxes in the car to a new style that can handle the new fuses.
has anyone had experience with this. im not sure if i could just slice the old to the new or what. |

i wish it were do-able cause i would. that mess of a fusebox is just crazy. there's like 7 plugs in the back that hook up the fusebox to the actual electrical system. it's almost impossible to get to and hard to make the plugs get good connections to the fusebox. we had to jimmy mine like back and forth to get most of what i needed turned on. my backlight for fuel guage still isn't 100%.. sometimes it turns on when i go over a bump and then sometimes it turns off again.

I am guessing that you have an early 944 or a 924S? PeP Boys has the fuses, and Pelican has them also. For the lights in the dash, try to switch some lights around. in ym early car, I had some lights that didnt work, but I switched some around, now I have one light in my tach. (OK for me) and when I turn my brights on, my fuel guage goes off? Maybee the gas guage is loose?

I regret to say i have too much experience with the wiring and fuse box on the early interior cars. I basically rewired my friends early '85, replacing a few of the harnesses which were burnt up and also fixing the absolute mess of pulled out wires from the fuse block. This took the better part of a week to get done, AND i had the dashboard out of the car. This would be a complete labor of love and would require becoming very intimate with the factory wiring diagrams, which gives me a headache if i look at it for too long.
The other issue is figuring out where to place the actual fuse block. The later cars have the mounting point basically cast into the chassis of the car, you would essentially have to cut this entire section out and also change the mounting location of the windshield wiper motor. Basically what im trying to get at, this would be a huge undertaking and more trouble than its worth i think. My '94 E320 uses the same type of fuse as the early 944, i just bought an assortment pack from my local autoplace and leave them in the arm rest compartment.

If you look around, you can find slightly higher wattage bulbs that really make the guages look better. Something like 1.2W instead of 0.9W, or maybe it was 2.7W instead of 1.2W.
