1990 944 bought for $600
What to do?
50,000 miles. sitting for years. straight body except where children jumped on the roof and it corroded. Steering rack leaks. Can't register it here in the Emirates. Chop the top create a roadster kit car or race car that I can export home? Use the parts? I've got 3 951s. Any photos of similar projects anywhere? diverdan |

How much does it cost to export it home?
We need pics of the damage. Sunroof? Did it collapse inside the car too? etc. Should be a decent find if you can get it home for less than $2k total (inc. purchase price) ![]()

Car came from factory without sunroof.
There is a 1990 944 convertible on wrecked bike . com for only $4995 and it is straight. (However its been sitting a long time. That could be a good marriage for this car but I would only keep it if it was very radical.) EPA and DOT make it too costly to bring mine home as a whole car. Shipping alone will be about $1000.00 in a container. (Counting on a 2 high stack in a 40 footer.) Diverdan |

Why would chopping the top change it's car class? Bringing it back to USA?

The car would be weakened by choping the top and making it a convertible in my opinion and not be worth the effort. Best bet is to find a replacement roof and have it welded in or just repair the damaged area and repaint the roof only. Sounds too costly to bring car home so you might have to leave it there when you leave.

cause then it would be imported as a kit car instead of a production car. problem is then, u can't register it as a regular road car. u can only register it as a race or show car limited to like 3000 miles a year.

When the car arrived I checked it out and it is really best used as a parts car. Looks like it may have been rolled early in its life. Japanese edition was pretty sparse. No leather, no air bags, no sunroof etc. AC was stripped out and smoe parts missing from efi. Very rough, but still the seats carpets and door panels are okay as is some of the sheet metal.
So parts car she'll be. I'll spend the time on my good original cars. Dan |

A 1990 would be a S2? If the motor is in good shape, its worth having. 3.0L 16V 200HP+. A normal 944 is 140HP 8V 2.5L.
