well, as there is a varying understanding on what is a "cup" wheel, and a good amount of misinformation about this, it's hard to answer that - the only wheel porsche actually used the term "cup" on was the 993 Cup - all of the other designations using that term are misnomers - you can see the correct designations on the wheel enhancement site

but to answer the question, the 17" wheel that came on the early 968 is a C2 Turbo - the 17" wheel that came on the later 968 is a 993 Cup - the weight is about 25lbs rear and 23 lbs front for the early and 23 and 20 for the late

the thing to consider is also the weight of the tire - you can easily gain more weight there than from the wheel - tire rack has a fairly complete listing of tire weights

Click on "Felgen" then "Tabelle" if this does not open correctly http://944racing.de/reload.php?urltogo=http://944racing.de/felgen.html

I went from 15x8 fuchs running 245/50 Hoosier R6's to 17" "cups" running 275/40's R6's. The weight increase was 12lbs per wheel

ouch - that's an effective gain of 192lbs on the car, after factoring in the rotating mass - that's the kind of gain that is easily felt in every aspect of driving, from braking to acceleration to how the suspension acts

i'm still hunting for the perfect set of 17s so i can drop a few pounds - i am torn between what is super lightweight but hard to keep clean and what is a bit heavier but easier on the maintenance - tires are the real hangup though - nothing available in the profile i want in a 17, and i'm not sure i want to give up any of the grip i have now

lol - i've been riding this fence for a LONG time now though

I needed more brake and more rubber on the road, the only way to do that was with bigger wheels. We will see if it turns into reduced lap times or was a waste of money in early March.

lol - it is a never ending circle isn't it? need more brake and more rubber - get bigger wheels - now need more brake and more power to make up for that - going faster now - now need bigger suspension to handle bigger loads - now need more brake again......................

Factoid: I recently weighed a turbo twist with a pirelli 255/45/17 (?I think) and it was about 55lbs.

Another factoid: 225/50/15 toyo on a cookie was 34lbs.

e moore,
those numbers match what i thought. when i picked up the fuch tire/wheel, it was easy. Picking up the cup tire/wheel is another story. so we lose some horsepower/weight ratio just so that my eyes are pleased. i guess it is worth it...now....how do i add some more HP? i have done nearly everything, cold air intake, MSD ignition, bursch headers, berry chip...all of it lost to the extra weight of the cups???!!!!

Look in the recent picture thread, the 17" wheels on my car are 7.5's and 8.5's, I believe front with tire was shy of 50lb's, and rear with tire was just over. They are wheels by an Australian company called ROH.

Wheel and tire weights for my 17's are actually 43.lb's. front and 49.5lb's rear.(205/50/17, and 255/40/17).
