mainshaft noise

in my 87 S, i have the mainshaft noise in the transmission. clutch in, it goes away and clutch out, it rattles around...so my question is, how long do i have before it gives? anyone else have this or have fixed it themselves? i'm a mechanic so i have access to the tools, lift, parts, ect. just what do i need to get? and sort of how long am I lookin here, 1 day, 2? clarks garage didn't have anything on this subject so thats why i am posting.

is it also wise to pull the torque tube as well and replace the clutch while i'm there?

thanks, kyle

err...

With that model it is more likely a clutch, which gives symptoms in line with your description. Pulling the torque tube is a possibility, but most of the time they are OK as well. Think Clutch job, Clarks is pretty good in detailing the steps and a search of this forum can fill in some of the tougher bits.

If it is a mainshaft, your best bet is to replace the transmisson as rebuilding them takes a bunch of specialized tools and a dash of skill. Post a WTB, there are some out there.

How long will it last?? Your guess is as good as any. I would not drive the car as you are running a risk of taking the good parts along with the bad in case of a failure.

Have you checked and/or replaced the trans fluid? did it look/ smell OK? Did you listen for the noise from under the car to find out if it is up forward at the clutch or back at the Transaxle?

it is definetly ar the rear, in the transaxle...its like a clicking noice but really fast until you push the clutch in and then the clicking gets slower until it stops...the fluid was changed with redline 75-90ns about 5 months ago. is it just a bearing that goes bad? like the center that hold the ball breaks? the fluid I changed was clean, no debris in it..

Mine has been doing that for years. A while back I read a PCA tech article that stated this is a common noise. I do not recall where or what I read and was not successful archiving it from the PCA but I still believe it is there I read about it.

In short I too was curious about the noise and researched it and that is what I got out of it and I have had no issues running my car both street and track. I just keep the clutch pedal down or deal with it by playing some music.

Oh.....The noise has been there for over 7 years....

87.......Never gave it a second thought to pull the tube after I read the article.....I do believe there are posts here on this issue and on the Rennlist.....try a search on it for " torque tube noise".

IIRC the article stated it was one of the tube bearings or the pinion bearing but can't swear on it.

My noise is a "chirp" not a click/clack....fyi

where was your noise, in the TT or transaxle? mine i believe is coming from the transaxle in the front. (which would be hard to distinguish between where the TT bolts onto the transaxle..)
my noise would be a chirp as well...guess i'll just run it until it comes apart..haha.

The 944 has a gear rattle at idle with the engaged. This is normal. I have had a few cars that have this condition. If you take out all the insulation out of the 911 they have it also.

My 87 924S makes the same rattle noise. Has done it for years. Hardly even noticable.

Changed to Mobil 1 synthetic. Didn't change the noise, but it did shift much better.

One thing I did do that quieted the noise dramatically was to carefully examine and "adjust" all the little heat shields under there. Tap on the heat shields to see if it is causing the rattling and "adjust" accordingly.

Might want to check out the CV joints before tearing into the TT or transmission. They can be the source of much "clicking" especially if the boots are torn.

cvs are less that 1 year old and replaced with brand new units, not rebuilt. they have no tears in the boots and the bolts are tight
