rise and fall

Hi, would anyone be kind enough to advise me on a possible cause of revs at tickover rising to approximately 1500 then dropping back, this happened the other day and carried on, up and down, for about 1 minute, it has not happened since, but I want to be prepared for a possible problem that might be round the corner, thanks.
