Hi all,
I've got an early 85 N/A that has a funky problem I can't figure out ...wonder if anyone has ran in to it before???I was driving through the canyon last week, no longer than a 30 mile trip, never exceeding 4th gear, or 60mph. I got in and got out perfectly fine and hopped on to the highway. I was cruising around 60mph in 5th gear for about 3-5 miles and the engine started cutting out, i shifted down in to 4th and gave it more gas, the car kept puttering and eventually the engine cut out . I coasted in to the next exit and started her up again with no problem...so i drove another couple miles to a gas station, getting up to 3rd gear and the car drove fine...it idled fine and throttle response was good..so i thought that maybe 5th gear was delivering too much fuel for the engine to burn so i let the car run for about 10 minutes...i got back in threw it in to first and got up to 30mph before engine cut out again! this time it wouldn't start afterwards] ...i let it sit for about and hour and she started right up again then drove around problem free to my place...No leaks, no smells, nothin. It did it the following day in a similar fashion leaving me stranded yet again. My mechanic says it could be that fuel pump could be on its way out, the fuel filter could be clogged, or it could be the coolant sensor that is making the computer misjudge the temp to fuel delivery ratio. He also said that it less likely that the engine is flooding, and more like its not giving it enough fuel to work with. I'm stumped! and he's not a 100% certain either. Fuel pressure tests didn't indicate anything, and I'm replacing the filter right now. Any info would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for taking the time to read. Dustyn.

I think your main relay(DME Relay) is going bad. Replacing the coolant temp
sensors helps alot with fuel injections systems and fuel consumptions issure. No matter what , early 944s owner will carry spare DME relay. |

I had the exact problem in my Bug....it would run great, then just stop, and restart whenever it felt like it. In my case, My fuel pump literally fell apart (thought i could go with the $40 cheaper non-German part - WRONG) just something to think about.

Replacing the fuel filter and always carry a spare DME relay sounds like good advice.
If your car has run normal before the last 30 mile run, you may have moisture in the tank and need to put a gas moisture remover additive in the tank. My other guess is that you got a bad tank of "winter gas" that has some type of additive to reduce pollution. Switch stations to see if your car runs better. You have checked the fuel pressure, so I don't think it is the pump. GL John_AZ 1988 924S 59K today at AZ Cardinals Stadium, Glendale + 1987 924S 112.8K DD |

You guys are great, thanks again for reading my 'saga.' Next step is to replace the the DME relay!
I'll let you know if that's the fix. Dustyn. P.S - If anyone else has some more advice, please keep it coming! I'm sure the info will help anyone else that has these symptoms too. Last edited by 9:44 Dismissile; 02-03-2009 at 08:53 PM.. |
