1987 944S Complete head rebuild... HELP!

I just got a 1987 944S that needs a complete head rebuild. Apparently the TC tensioner failed and junked the top end. Where can I go, what book/video can I buy that will give me step by step instructions on how to rebuild the top end?

What parts do I need? where should I start? what tools do I need? I'm mechanically inclined but I have never worked on this engine before... although I have browsed its schematics.

Do you have access to a shop press and the S head fixture tool?

I say that, because the S ans S2 heads are virtually impossile to rebuild without the proper tools. The retainers and keepers are recessed deep into the back of the head making most valve spring compressors useless!

Just removing the valves takes me almost 45 minutes, and I've done over a dozen of them now!

I would just send it to many944s for a rebuild. He offers the best prices around. He did replace the valve seals on my 8V head and did a great job.

Thanks speedy!
I'm all for people learning how to upkeep these engines on their own. In this situation I was simply trying to warn that without the proper tools, more harm can come to the head than was already done! Not to mention how easy it is to put an eye out without the right tools when valve springs are involved!

Endat, if you are interested in having me rebuild your head, you can find more info on my webpage http://benms.com/944head.html. You can ship the head to me, I will remove all the valves check them all for any bend, measure the valve guides and zyglow the head for cracks. Inspection on an S head runs $100, if the head is rebuildable, and you choose to do so, that $100 inspection fee goes toward the rebuild price.

LMK!

Thanks many944s! The head is definitely cracked at the oil tensioner, quite badly.. I even have a chipped tooth on the exhaust cam. I'm not exactly sure if it's rebuildable.. I haven't gone further than removing the valve cover and removing the timing chain and broken plastic.

I guess it needs to be replaced or seriously rebuilt. If it sounds like something you would be interested in, then I am definitely interested in that solution... if not, maybe I can purchase one and send my broken one as a core for replacement.

I'm sorry - that really sucks. If you still have the chunk of aluminum that cracked off, you could take it to a good welder and ask if he/she can weld it back together, or if they know someone who can.

Sorry I haven't been on in a couple of days, my daughter has had the flu, and I left bright and early this morning for Indy to pick up roll cage tube stock...

Provided the broken spark plug tube in the photo above is the only broken section, it sould easily be welded. *however* it is very possible that there is a hidden crack beneath that broken piece (near the base of the tensioner) that would be very difficult to repair, only cleaning and crack checking would reveal that.

From your post back, I would stay ontop of the head on evilbay! If you can get it for a reasonable price, that would be the easiest way to get you back on the road. I have purchased from that seller before, and had no problems. If you do pick up that head, I would suggest cleaning the head, having it checked for cracks, check the guides and seats and install new valve seals.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line!
