924 Spark Plug Wiring Pattern
Is there a simple rule from experience to check the distributor-spark plug wiring pattern on a 1980 924 ?.
I have just bought one in New Zealand as a project (after 6 years in storage) and suspect that it has crossed spark-plug leads. It does not make up a 1-3-4-2 pattern, clockwise or anticlockwise, and does not run although it sounds like it is trying to fire. I have looked at the Haynes manual and photos of engines bays on the net and can't make it out. Could someone tell me which distributor socket is for the wire for the number one cylinder, which way the distributer turns (looking down at the top) and which cylinder (front or rear) is the number one please. |
When the engine is at TDC, the rotor should be pointing at the #1 lead on the cap; this should also mean it's basically pointing at the rear-most bolt on the intake manifold.
IIRC, it's then counter-clockwise from that (though there's a chance I'm wrong - sorry, can't check right now, one car's under snow, the other's in storage offsite). |

According to Haynes it is 1-3-4-2 and clockwise.

I connected it up as described and it looks good, turned it over, but it did not fire. There is a spark at one of the plugs, a bit weak in comparison to what I see on my jap family car, but it's there so I will start looking at the fuel. The car has been in storage. Thanks again |
I'd be suspicious of a gummed-up fuel distributor or the like, not uncommon - pull the fuel injectors and look for spray (jump the fuel pump relay and lift the air flow plate).

Thanks, I'm doing this in between studying and writing assignments so it could be a bit drawn out.
I've jumped the fuel pump relay which has raised more questions so I have posted a new thread entitled `Is there a relationship between the ignition and fuel control systems in the 924 ? to see if anyone has struck this before. Thanks for your help. |

I just came back from uni and switched out the ignition unit and coil with another set I got from a wreaked 924 for $40, and she starts now. I tested the fuel system and the thermo time switch tests bad - I have been reading - but it does not seem to mind too much. I will put some injector cleaner in the fuel and run to warm and then change the filters and oil before doing anything else. cheers. |
Thermo time switch being bad won't likely bug you until it starts getting cold...
