Self honking horn problem

I had to pull the horn relay today.

The darn thing would start to honk on its own (embarrassing) randomly while going down the street and freeway. There were many short random bursts.

People were looking at me strangely. Like I had something to do with it...

Anyway, I pulled over and pulled the relay.

Anyone have a solution or idea?

try wearing a George Bush mask whilst driving the car, then people will understand why the unwarranted aggression.

pull the steering wheel horn pad and check the wire, maybe frayed,
replace the relay,
chech the horn ring under the steering
check the nut behind the wheel (thats you), enroll in anti road rage classes

Ugh!

Swap the relay for the horn with the fog lights... same relay. Fixed mine. Order a new relay. Don't pull the horn pad, etc, without doing this simple test first...

Earl, just exactly are you trying to tell me? I already checked the wire with the sticking the finger in the socket, tongue to the wire trick and I got shocked! That means the relay works..Right?

And I failed my last 2 anti rage classes.. Just dont work!

And which horny ring would that be?

+1 on trading out relays before you tear apart the steering wheel.

If you took the steering wheel off, or had to get behind the dash there are 3 flathead screws underneath the stering wheel. If you took these out, and didnt screw them in fully, the horn will spontaniously honk, because when you turn L/R, the horn contacts with the other contact, then honks the horn. Happened to me a few times:P

Day light saviong already happened, its 11:04AM here, but my post time says 12:04PM. Must of been the DeLorean ride last night, wheeew, what a ride, dont remember anything after I hit 88MPH?

Maybe you need to try the "forehead-to-the-wire" trick. Several times.

This happened to me. The horn pad was loose and honk every time I took a turn or went over a bump. This became very embarrassing when someone was in the cross walk that I was trying to turn through.
DONT remove the steering wheel. The horn pad just rips off. Sit in the drivers seat, grab both sides of the pad and pull towards you. There are three brass bolts in the steering wheel. They probably just need a good tightening. They hold in plastic retainers, so don't over tighten, use ~7 Nm ect. Once tightened and the horn pad replaced, if the horn doesn't the brass pins in the horn pad might have sunk in. To fix this, shim the brass bolts with a small to raise them a little.

My problem turned out to be a bad relay of all things. Apparently they just get old and fall apart. Put in a brand new relay and no more arbitrary horn.
I thought that when a relay went out, nothing works but was not the case.

sorry, this isn't really related to the topic of fixing horns, but I'm finding the whole scene of people driving around with random horn bursts pretty funny so I have my own "trick" to tell you about.

For some reason my car sets off Toyota alarm systems. Every time I drive close by a parked Toyota at low speed its alarm goes off for about 5-6 seconds

So I can amuse young relatives by taking them for a drive through a parking lot and getting all the Toyotas to "make noise" Pretty good way to pass time with 3-4 year olds

I've had the same problem happen to me where the horn will honk randomly when turning the wheel.

What I've narrowed it down to is the brush from the steering wheel horn contact was scraping the metal hub of the steering wheel mount, causing it to scrape off the paint in that area.

When the wheel was turned to where that bare area touched the copper contact it would make connection and honk the horn.

I tried re-painting the hub and bending the contact tab a little and it has worked for a little while but it is now back to scraping the hub again.

My guess is that the contact is just too worn to hold that shape. Does anyone know if this part is replaceable?

You might want to try replacing that relay before messing around with the horn contacts themselves. Its a really cheap part and may save you a lot of pain in the long run. It is really questionable if that piece you are messing with is the problem and very unusual.
