A couple of questions about 944 rear hub assemblies
Please look at the third post in this thread. I forgot some info in my original post
Ok I need to clarify something. I am looking for some rear hubs and associated parts for my V8 Rabbit project. What I want is the later model single wheel bearing rear hub setup. What I can't figure out is what year they changed to the single wheel bearing. Accdording to Pelicans own info it looks like they changed from two wheel bearings to a single wheel bearing in 1985. Is this correct? Also, does anyone have any opinions as to which arrangement is stronger. In the 4x4 world usually the more bearings supporting any shaft the better. Does this sort of thing hold true in this instance? Has anyone had any experiences with either the dual bearing or single bearing set up that can give me some direction in this matter? let me ask the production date becouse 1985 was the 1st. year for the A2 body cars here in the USA . that would make it a golf or a gti . and are you talking about the stub axles ? then is it a drum or disk ?disk only on the gti for 1985 . and in all the factory service manuals and factory microfilm parts brake downs i have for vw from 1975 to 1992 . i see no single rear wheel bearings for the rear stub axles . all have a bigger inner and a smaller outter .

Oh sorry I should have mentioned that I was looking at 944 rear hubs.
Major oversite on my part. So, lets pretend that I said I am looking at 944 rear hubs for my V8 rabbit project. All of my inquiries are about the 944 hubs. |

IIRC the later model single bearing set is really 2 bearing sets in 1 package.
I do definitely remember the early(83-85) 2 seperate bearings had VW T1 beetle part numbers. To answer your question, the changeover happened in 85.5 and I think it was at the same time when the rear trailing arm went from steel to aluminum.
