Tire?

I have an 83 944 with the cookie cutters and i need new tires but i was thinking of running a smaller sidewall and a little wider possibly a 255 50 15. does anyone know if these will fit?
I am also redoing these rims being the aluminum has seen better days i am stripping all of the black off and re-polishing the ring and having them powder-coated clear. So i do not want to buy a different style of rim.
thanks

The widest most will run on a 7" rim is a 245. Decreasing sidewall only hurts this problem as your sidewall stiffness increases and the sidewall size decreases.

I believe most people around here run a 225 on most early rims.

I have 225/50/15 tires on Cookie Cutters. That's as wide as I would go on a 7" wheel.

I did see 285s stuffed on to Cookie Cutters once, at an autocross. They looked really silly, and the driver couldn't figure out how I could beat him so badly. The wide tread cannot sit flat on the pavement when the sidewalls are so pinched.

A 944 has plenty of room for a wide tire in the rear. With proper offsets, 275s are no problem. My 944S has 265s in the rear, but certainly not on a 7" wheel.

I run 225/50/15's on my lowered 924. I would think they should easily fit on a 44...

check around. i bet you can find a set of wheels to fit your car for fairly cheap that are wider.

I'll semi-hijack your thread...
What would give better grip, narrow 195/50/15 R compound tire or wide 225/50/15 Summer/Performance tire?
