chip change improved mpg 42%

Hi Folks,

About two years I got a "performance chip" from Accelracing in the UK. The 0-60 mph time improved by about 0.3 to 0.5 seconds (can't remember what it was though) and the car felt less hesitant sometimes, but over time I felt the car was was not as happy as I remembered. The exhaust is looking sooty, and the plugs are a bit darker than I'd like.

Anyway, I thought I'd check the mpg I was getting these days, and was a bit startled to find it was low 17s. On one run I checked with the car already warmed up, filled the tank and raced around some nice roads at more than 50 and less than 100 mph for 25 miles or so, and refilled. I got 17.52 mpg. Bummer.

Today I changed my chip back to the Porsche standard, warmed her up, then filled up, raced around pretty much the same roads at pretty much the same speeds, for 28 miles. I got 24.98 mpg on the refill. She does seem a little slower sometimes, but hells teeth, I think I'd rather have a 42% fuel saving ;)

I'm going to lever the injectors out tommorrow and send them off for cleaning, and see what happens with a new air filter, a bit of AFM cleaning etc.

best regards
Rissole

Yea Thats normal. Performance chips get better throttle response cleaner reving and a little more power, from playing with fuel trims and timing advance. Most tend to run a little richer then the stock chip. SO your brown plugs and drop in MPG is normal and not harmfull to the car, only your bank account. Good thing is gas around here is cheap so I dont mind the drop my performance mods may have givin me ;-)

a buddy of mine had an Audi 20v turbo (an inline 5 cylinder turbo) a small company over in Germany made a chip for it and a waste gate spring. we installed both, and tested. miles/gallon went up 5mpg and horsepower went from 200-305. over 100hp! sometimes chips will improve gas milage. in our case it seems it doesn't. sad sad. im thinkin about a chip, ive done nearly everything else... ive seen ones for 944 for like 50 bucks... we thinkin of the same chip? how much was yours, any recommendations?

I have an Accelracing chip in my 924S, have noted via butt dyno a slight increase in performance,& rev limiter up by 300 rpm but no appreciable difference in fuel consumption. In fact I achieved 30 approx(not to two decimal places)mpg on Saturday with a 250 mile roundtrip(cruising at 3900-4000 rpm except in the presence of cameras)to an AutoX event,( and that included 7 runs all in 1st gear).

Not all chips will harm mpg, depends on the car and the tuner who made the chip, I recommend eather a fr wilk chip, or a russell berry max chip, I think the max chip is slightly better tuned, if you wanba go nuts get the maxtronic with maxtune

This weekend I thought if I can manage 25mpg zooming around the roads quite fast, surely I could manage more than 30mpg if I just drive her gently around 50-60mph. The weather was wet, so I had lights and wipers on from time to time; but I got just over 24mpg.

So that wasn't much cop. Need to study this Maxtune stuff I think.

cheers
Rissole.

If you have any question on the Maxtune hit me up. I have one installed on my 924S with 93 octane race maps loaded. LOVE IT
