I give up! Thinking of parting out my 1988

EDIT: Sorry meant to post in Parts Forum

Ok so calculating the repairs and misc peices to finish my car i think im pissing in the wind. Im interested in a few local 944 Turbos and am pondering the thought of parting out my 88 non-turbo. I just dont know if there is an intrest yet. I need to pretty much sell most of it to be able to buy the next. So, if i decide to part this car out, will anyone be needing anything from it?

My 1988 Pics

Here are links to the cars i am intrested in,
87 944 Turbo
86 944 Turbo

Car I may part out

leaks some oil from front, misc interior parts needed, sun roof does not work so i just take it off when nice, i get a "clink" when i press clutch in(sometimes), rough vibration on the stick at 3k rpm to 3500k then disapates, minor body work, rear breaks, cv's, .... had belt work done in sept 07. i have get to get as much as possible. i would take an offer. drive it home. engine runs well. needs wires. has new cap and rotor, tires and a car load of newer parts. its the only car i have and cant keep putting dough into it. im looking to make enogh for a down payment on a turbo

The two ads you posted - one is gone, the other, in Elkins, just check that out thoroughly. For some reason my spidey-sense is going off at this one. I also am looking for a 951 and have seen that posting a couple of times now, be careful... That one just screams "what maintenance?" to me...

you might have better luck with this one... the guy sounded very nice and is a mechanic that has done all the work on the car. and its a little less. Ive already made arrangements for another car but this one sounded good too.... He also offerer if i ever needed to fix anything on my car that he would instruct me on how to fix it. He also has a couple of regular ones for sale. He might buy yours who knows or take a little off of this car

Wonder what gave you that idea.... The big fluid spots around the car and under the engine side lol

I would definitely be willing to buy some parts off of you for my 88. I need front strut assemblies to put inserts into, drivers front fender if shipping isn't too bad, drivers door handle, center console cover, and the list goes on. I would be willing to take all of it off of you for a half-way decent price.

That would scare quite a few, but most of the time they're easy fixings. Dump the power steering for a manual rack and reseal the front of the motor. A days worth of drinking beer, two if you can drag it out that long and fool the wife.

Damn Brad, you've had 3 951's? My guess is it's not a wise move to hop to one. I'm curious as to the 16v '86. Thought the '87S was the first 16v motor in the 924/944 line.

Nice looking car but its parked outside of a car dealer. This will probably, make that most likely, be a huge crap shoot as the dealer will know absoulotly nothing about what maintenance has or has not been done. A PPI would be a must.

well i spoke to this guy a few times at Porsche events. He has a 993 and a 944 turbo himself. he ran this car thru a shop in tulsa and had other stuff done in little rock. my local porsche club is having a pizza meet this tuesday and were going to discus my car and the options with this turbo. he only wants 7900 cash price. i really dont have the best credit so parting my car out to help with the down will be a plus. he offered to finance it with 3,000 down as an option. he has had the car for 6 months and on his lot for almost 1 month. also has origional wheels. i think if i buy the car those wheels will go to help pay the car off, then look at adding some twists down the road. I just dont like the red interior but figured seat cobers, matts etc would tone it down.

If the guy knows 944's then it might not be a bad idea, I would just get him to itemize all the work done on the invoice for the car. At least then you will have some maintenance records if you ever did want to sell the car.

Matt,
I found this page of "what can go wrong or has gone wrong" on http://www.oz951.com/public/index.htm site. Many others but this one has good links:

http://www.oz951.com/public/broken.htm

I am surprised he did not list the turbo itself needing to be replaced.

Hah. Nothing wrong with the 951s, just been through my fair share...
The 87 track car I sold for who knows what reason, then bought the other 87 which had issues - definite P.O. problems, like the front clip being welded back together. Then the 88 Turbo S which I sold for who knows what reason also. I love the 951s, can't wait to find one now.

The '86 16v - my 8v motor blew the oil pan gasket and I went through a few 951s... lol, so after that I swapped it out for the 16v motor - big time difference, a lot more fun to drive. 16v motor + 8v gearing = fun

I honestly don't remember the specific reason for the first one... hah.
The last one to pay off some debt.
