how are the door locks "supposed" to work?

I just asked a dumb question regarding if my car was lowered, so let's go 2 for 2 and ask anopther dumb question.

My power locks don't work right. I don't think.

The problem: my power door lock button only worked for the passenger door, not the driver door. I couldn't even push the pin down to lock it manually, so i couldn't lock my door at all.

Yesterday, I removed the door panel to get a better look. I found that the actuator did move when I hit the button, so that works, but the actuator isn't connected to anything, the boot side of it just moves left and right without purpose. I realize i need a clip to attach it to the lock mechanizim. But one would think that I should still be able to lock the door manually, right? well, sort of.

I determined that I can only lock the door if it's closed. If I'm in the car, I can push the pin down and lock the door to lock myself in. If I'm out of the car, I can use the key to lock the door from the outside. But what I can't do is: open the door, get out of the car, push the botton and close the door thereby locking it. If I try to push the pin down while the door is open, it just won't budge.
Is this normal?

Check your missing piece for the power lock. Porsche built a nice feature into the car so you can "never" lock your keys inside. You have to manually lock and unlock the driver side door from the outside. Of course, you could lock the driver door, go in the passenger door, leave the keys in, lock the door, and lock your keys in!

This is a GREAT site for anyone with a 944. Take some time and really look through this site! www.clarks-garage.com.

Any idea when the timing belts were changed last???

Post all of your questions no matter how stupid they might sound.

cool. thanks for the info. it sounds as it the locks are working properly, minus that missing piece on the actuator. i guess the easiest thing would be to buy that piece so the actuator works properly and then get a keyless entry system. that may be a project down the road.

And yeah, I'm familiar with Clarks. I've already used that resource for quite a few "quick fixes" that i never would have figured out on my own. Good stuff!

I did not have power locks. I did have an alarm installed. After they installed the alarm I read up on actuators and how easy they would be to install. So I installed a couple relays and two actuators and hooked it up the the alarm. Now I have power locks.
