951 Intercooler in a 87 924S
Has anyone really done this? I was looking things over yesterday (took the center panel off) and it really does not look like it will fit. Ya I know about taking the metal out and opening up the space a bit BUT I think there is going to be an issue with getting the plumbing up and out to the motor. It looks like the design / holes in the upper rad support is different as well.
Ohya I intend to install a 931 nose with the vents but at this point it may be better easier to just do a custom front mount down lower in front of the rad. Problem #2 with the 931 nose is that it looks like I Will have to weld on some tabs with studs as well as weld in some metal where the rivets were drilled out to get proper mounting points for it in my car. I am seriously wondering if it would be better to have a body shop cut out the vent portion of the 931 nose and splice it in to the nose piece I have. A quality body man should be able to do it in a couple of hours. For me it would be a day or three and I would probably screw it up (I hate body work) Anyone have photos / write ups etc on any of this? Some Pix ![]() ![]() |

The upper radiator support is significantly different for the early 944 and 924S. It would take a bit of work to make it fit.. i think your better off doing a custom front mount infront of the radiator.

Thanks that is what I thought. In the post 85.5 cars is it is bolt in?
My 87 924s is such a hodgepodge of pre and post 85.5 stuff it drives me nuts. |

I did both. I had a 951 shell that I cut up, I replaced the radiator support and part of the frame rails. For the upper valance to fit I cut the mount flange off the 924S and welded it on the 951 radiator support.
The vented valance does need studs welded to it so it can be bolted on. Mine doesnt fit as well as the 924S valance, especially with a 924CGT bumper. Mike |

May I ask what would be the point with installing an intercooler in a normally-aspirated car?

I'm quite interested in how it turns out, M-62s are pretty cheap. If you can handle fabricating the custom parts yourself, it might be a reasonably affordable option.

Well I am not going to go through all that for a 951 inter cooler. I am going to look at what it takes to get a FMIC in there. I am also going to see about possibly running the plumbing next to the rad down low instead of hacking up the upper rad support.

Have you considered an air to water intercooler? I would think that the radiator for one of those setups would be easier to squeeze in front of the main radiator than an air to air intercooler.

I have a PWR 4x6 A-W ic and it ROCKS! Compact, easy to install, highly efficient, and great flow loss numbers. Well worth considering if your budget allows it. Plus you won't need to cut the nose off you car to install it...
