Oil Pressure Gauge

One day last year my Oil Pressure Gauge pegged out past the 5 Bar mark. It used to work very well. I am guessing it to an electrical problem. When the key is off it drops right to 0. As soon as the key is turned to the on position with the car NOT running, it pegs right to the top.

The car runs great so I am guessing an electrical problem somewhere. Both wires are screwed onto the sensor and look clean. Could this be a problem with the ground? A problem with the gauges itself?

Any help here would be great!

Most likely is the pressure sender on the oil cooler, when they go bad they cause the gauge to peg. To double check, remove the the wire lead for the pressure sender (one lead is for pressure, the other is for the warning light) and ground it directly to the block. With the key 'on' the gauge should read zero.

I experienced chaffed wiring. The wring from the sending unit up and across the engine and under the MAF. Wiring was chaffed in the area behind the ignition distributor.

Just an update. The gauge stays pegged all the time unless the battery is disconnected.

I will try disconnecting and grounding to the block to see if it goes to zero. If it does go to zero is it a bad wire? Could I just leave that wire grounded and the gauge will work again?

Thanks for the help guys.

If the indicator wire is shorted or grounded, gauge will peg with ignition on.
