I decided since I am going through all the trouble of rewiring the car, I decided to give mine a luxury "real" wood dash look. So I went to a craft store, bought a birch unstained veneer (kraft wood). cut it with an exacto knife using the dash part as a template. then stained it and then glued it over the fake aluminum look.
Actually impressed at how nice it looks and about 16.00 worth of material and stain...and plenty left over to do the center console and around the gear shift. here is the first part picture. Used minwax stain. feels real nice too. ![]() tell me what you think.

Thanks, I thought I'd try to make an overlay, was going to get an exotic wood veneer. Found the birch instead locally so just tried it out.

+1 on all the "looks good" comments. that said I would do one more step and put a nice wet coat of polyurethane on it. if you wanna go real nuts you can put a couple coats on and then cut, buff and wax it just like paint. oooh, shiny! Then it'll look just like the wood veneer on those expen$ive british cars (well, it'll be birch and not walnut, but you get the idea.)

Polyurethane ....yeah that's an excellent idea!
doing this has relieved the stress of the burnt harness, and I still have a spare original dash bezel too in the event I wasn't happy with this and if I want to go back to stock look. The rest of the dash (console think I'll do too as I need to find a better console for "stock" Wish they had done a real aluminum facia.

just saw Jager Engineering's cost for a kit
,( $319.00)...whoa... think I'll keep on cutting the birch and staining. I'm sure their kit is worth it and looks real nice, but my oh my my budget is already being whipped with the necessities

Tung Oil works better for items exposed to exterior conditions. It's more maintanence, but doesn't yellow like alot of poly's.
