What year is your car? If it is a late model (1985/2), then you will need some offset screwdrivers and other gizmos to get the two Phillips head screws out.

I have not seen a good write up on this, even in Clark's Garage, but check it out. www.clarks-garage.com it might give you some ideas.

Good Luck, Keith

There is an allen bolt underneath the cylinder assembly that needs to come out. Make sure you have the ring out that is on the shaft before that it may need a little coaxing with a hammer and screwdriver. Once the asembly is out there is a little screw in the back of the iginition switch itself that needs to be taken out to remove it.

on the 944's from 1983 to 1985.1 a vw MK 1 column is used and then the VW MK2 columns were used . your column could be a MK1 column . if so then you will have to drill a small hole (1/8 inch) on the top side of the column were the ignition switch is . look for a ridge . there should be the part # there . measure from that ridge toward the steering column 10MM (3/8 inch ) them measure down from the top 12MM (15/32 inch ) and thats were you drill the 1/8 inch hole . there is a small spring were that hole now is push down with an all or small punch . when you drill that hole be sure not to drill a hole in the spring too . put the key in the switch turn the key and when pushing in the spring pull the lock assy out . when installing the new one just line it up were it should be and push it back in . there will be no need to use the key for this .

Are you replacing just the switch or the whole tumbler? For just the switch, you remove the horn pad, remove the steering wheel, disconnect the electrics and take out the screws holding the indicator and wiper arms, remove them, remove the black plastic sleeve, remove the 6mm (IIRC) hex head bolt on the left side of the column and pull the whole carrier out. Then you can get at the back of it to remove the switch.

What did I miss? Oh yeah, the upper and lower trim bits.

If it's the tumbler you're replacing then it's more involved. See above...
