Garage car lift

Looking at investing in a lift. Does anybody have this type of lift and have dropped their transaxle, Torque tube, exhaust, engine or did clutch replacement on a 944 with no issues? It's a bend Pac MD-6XP, 6,000 lbs. I'll appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Have had my car on one of those and could barely get the starter off trying to work around the scissor lift... would be good for a lot of things, but not really for what you've listed...

probably good for everything that doesn't involve working in the middle area of the car.

thanks for the replies guys.
I think I found the answer. post # 13 and 27 in this post on the 911 board.

Garage Lift

Quote: Tim Hancock.

"I have the Bend Pac MD6X. The best place to buy is Garage Equipment Supply on the web. They are on the east coast, but the lift drops ships from Bend Pak in California. They offer free shipping and 1 year ago I paid $1400. My boss just ordered one for his Vette and the price is now $1500 delivered."

"I recently put a new clutch in my 944 turbo which required removing the exhaust system, the rear mounted transmission, the torque tube that runs from front to rear etc etc. I did all this easily while the car was on the lift as there are wide open areas even in the middle of the lift."

I have one in my height-challenged garage. I routinely drop the engine and transaxle in my race car. Is a two post lift better, absolutely if you have the height. Does the scissor lift work well, absolutely, I'm glad I have one.

Working in the clutch are can be challenging but it is still easier than not having the lift at all. I consider the lift one of the best "tool" purchases that I have made.

What do you guys do to ensure the thing does not collapse on you? Does it have metal/strong teeth/safety tabs like a two post lift does? I imagine it works on pressure.

Mine has an automatic safety catch similar to what you find on a two-post rotary.

Thanks for the feedback Tim. Exactly what I need to hear from a fellow 924/944/968 diy. What brand did you get if you don't mind telling us?

I am still considering the 2-post lift. But my garage has a second floor bedroom and I am limited to 109" ceiling height. I can probably get the 2-post lift with the 111" overall height and just cut a hole on the drywall ceiling to fit the column.

American Automotive Equipment has a sale going on on all their lifts. Their 7,000 lb 2-post lift is only $1,595 with 111" height.
Their 57" rise scissor is $1,695. Shipping not included. I like the mobility of the scissor lift so I can drag it outside the garage for more headroom.

That Harbor Lift scissor jack shows it's 220V and not 110V.

Anyone know of a good scissor jack that's 110V - I don't have a 220 anywhere in my house and would prefer to not have to bring an electrican out to use one of these.

Here's one I found - it shows 115V?? I've never seen a 115V...is that the same plug as a standard 110V??

choinga, 110v - 115v whatever it takes. The answer is yes it will work in your standard outlet. I would check the amp load on the unit and the circuit you are using.

I have the bend-pac MD-6XP and it's 110V. If I had a choice I would go with the two-post lift over the scissor lift. One issue that I have is that my race car sits too low to the ground to just drive over it. Thus, I have to have wooden ramps on both sides that are always getting in the way when I'm working on the car. For major projects the ramps are moved out of the way.

I never move my lift around. It can be moved but is quite heavy.

My personal choice would be the 2 post if it will fit...the price is right too.

Since you don't move it around, how about digging and building a pit to fit the lift so it is flushed with the concrete floor.

Still thinking about getting a 2-post lift instead of the scissor.

Bel, I just think the scissor lift wouldn't be as usefull as the 2 post, but that's my opinion. My buddy has a scissor lift, and you can be limited in some projects.

Have you found another car to replace the one you gave your son?

Hey Rick. Actually no. He will be graduating soon and considering his offer to buy my 964 C2 (really cheap ) when he gets a job. Don't know yet which one to get.

I see that you have already sorted out your transaxle issue. Looks good too!

I grabbed one out of an 86 for $200.00 an hour away. Mine had a 1 inch hunk of the pinion gear floating around inside...I may buy another spare with a good r & p and have Ian at 944online do that $1295 refurb with syncros, and all new bearings.

Price: $2,276 ($1,989 + 287 shipping). Just need to make sure I have a 4" thick 3,000 psi concrete floor. Thanks for the link.
