A few random questions with pics
I apologize ahead of time for that I may ask some noob questions here. I want to get some stuff done with my 89' 951 but want to head in the right direction.
Venting I would just like to confirm if I got this right as I have been venting the cooling system but it just doesn't seem to work and I'm starting to doubt myself. Is the venting bolt located here (12mm)? It has a slight red mark next to it. Also, do you guys vent with the expansion cap on or off? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243074848.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243074881.jpg Power Steering Fluid What ATF Dexron power steering fluid do you guys recommend and where can I get it? Leak I'm not sure what is leaking here and I'm not sure what I'm even looking at (I'm guessing it's the transmission fluid?). The leak is very slow and is located in the bottom-rear-center of my car. It's located on the axle of the rear wheels. I am looking from the rear to the front of the vehicle as a reference. What can I do to remedy this situation? I apologize if the pics don't tell much. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243075835.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243075862.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243075884.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243075913.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243075984.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243076004.jpg Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys! :) |
Get yourself a couple cans of degreaser, a bunch of rags, and clean everything real well. Yes, that is the transmission.
When I bought my car I think every gasket and seal leaked on the engine and the entire engine has a nice coating of grease. Once I cleaned everything I was able to find the leaks. Some were worse than others. Once you get everything cleaned back there it should be pretty easy to find the leak. |
You are correct that is the bleed screw. You need to get the front of the car as high as possible to help bleed the air out. Turn the heat on full blast also. Usually i have the cap off during bleeding. It can be a real pain to do and may have to be done a few times. If you still have trouble, it may be worthwhile to rent / borrow a pressure tester to aid in bleeding.

Thanks for the replies! Yea I've been cleaning the darn thing, but time isn't on my side right now so I'll get back to it when I get the chance. It's a real mess down there.
I have Dexron III "Automatic Transmission Fluid". Will that work as the recommended ATF Dexron for power steering fluid or not? |
I have the same leak on my '89. What kind of trouble would Scott and I be getting into if we wanted to stop the leak? Is it a matter of just unbolting the bolts and putting a new seal of some kind in? I cannot imagine it is that simple. What about the side axel boot things that are leaking in his pics? I'm curious as to how hard it would be to stop these leaks, time investment and tools needed. Thanks a million.

Yes, your Dexron III will work just as well as Dexron for your power steering.

Thanks George! Yes, I would also like to know about what VII had said above about the transmission leak. Any inputs?
